Not trying to wind you all up, much wink I live four miles from Old Warden and approx twenty five miles from IWM Duxford so particularly at this time of the year we get all manner of vintage aircraft passing through the area either going to shows or displaying at Old Warden, the military fly their Apache helicopters from Wattisham in Suffolk to where ever daily with Chinooks coming from Odiham.

Until Air Atlantique stopped we used to every evening get a DC6 fly from Coventry to Europe which was worth watching pass over.

That and airline spotting as one of the main intersections is directly above us.

        Clive,

        GT40!

        Do tell please.

        Martin,

        Convert to side hinged.

Done that to my garage one and it's the best thing I did to it, plus the same with the Carport one, although it came without the 'up&over' gubbins.

Geoff – Can TIG practice be helping with my stick welding?

          Geoff,

I did consider side hinged but settled for a modern up and over and having seen the mechanism of the new type doors its all metal framed and gets rid of wooden frames and more maintenance where as the steel frame has plastic facia's

            Jason,

Thats a very nice engine, similar looking to an Amanco air cooled except the Amanco has a fan mounted on the side of the barrel fins, whats your ignition sytem.

Decided to start a new C/L stunt model after I found a plan in an ancient Aeromodeller (Feb 1991).

Built a simple wing jig and found a use for the 3mm paxolin that I found last year:

Turned a piece of it into a bellcrank, drilled the centre 9.5mm which was just right to press in a 1/8" x 3/8" o.d. x 1/4" i.d. ball race salvaged from a disk drive – that should help give smooth controls.

Now trying to decide whether to turn some brass bushes for the leadout and control rods.

Just trepanned (triphained?) two lumps of 6082. Larger one is 4" diameter and 49mm thick. Both of these are going to have a 65mm dia finished bore but rather than progressive drilling and boring the core away I reground a 2.5mm parting blade so now have two 55 diameter blanks for future use. Took about 30 minutes to do both.

                  daveb,

Your suggestion of 4/11/14 appears to have done the trick.

We've just had a day of fairly heavy rain being pushed along by Westerly winds and not a drop of water collected on the top of the door.

Only now been able to check, so thank you once again yes

Pity the old body isn't so easily fixed sad

Geoff – Her indoors will be happy at not having water drip onto her hair now.

Spent a pleasant hour in the sunny garden at Charlecote House watching an Air Atlantique Dak circling for touch and goes. Even my wife enjoyed watching it. Used to work on the flight line for Coventry and I remember seeing the smoke rising moments after the 737 crashed in Willenhall Wood from my office window.

                      Neil,

Not a pleasant sight watching an Aircraft crash, I took my wife to her first Airshow at Biggin Hill thirty odd years ago when The Invader barrel rolled into the ground in the hollow at the end of the airfield, my wife never went to another show after that.

Whilst on the subject of aircraft:

This is the last year that the UK Vulcan will be flying, so will be the last chance to watch this great sight.

The website lists appearances so I've put a link here:

Not sure which is more antisocial – PLAs without effective silencing roaring overhead drowning out the sound of the test match as I sit in my garden reading ME on a sunny afternoon or the endless repetition of an icecream van preying on fat blob kids in the council estate half a mile upwind.

Spent the evening stripping down a rather rusty Startrite 301 wood bandsaw. Crude but sturdy cast iron blade guides so may not have to make ball bearing guides straight away. All old fashioned steel – no plastic or aluminium so good for another generation.

Absolutely agree if the volume is above normal adult communication level which means not heard above 3 yards away. Also no power tools, lawnmowers, bonfires or hanging washing on a Sunday.

My neighbour's young son (about 7 y.o.) proudly told me that his daddy wears ear muffs when mowing the lawn after he spotted me doing the nature strip with the (quiet) Briggs & Stratton powered 4 stroke mower. Apart from the fact that I would like to invent a laser grass trimmer I told the young lad to tell his daddy to get a quieter mower. This same person wears his hi-vis fluoro jacket when mowing then wears flip-flops when driving – we also have muppets in Australia!

I have also heard of a bloke who raised the ire of a few anglers when his mobile phone rang during a trout fly-fishing session – and he actually answered it. Definitely not cricket!

Ian thanks for this post, I have some Brass stock i wish to do this to minimise waste.

I have often done this sort of thing with woodturning, coring the centres so no to waste often well grained timber. I do use a finer less depth parting tool when doing it though.

I am surprised that the internal circumference allowed the tool you have used to cut as deep through as it has without causing some trouble even though you have a rake/undercut.

I have a couple of days supply in the porch bin and can use the reserve stack as the middle will be dry though water drips off the sheet cover down the sides. How long does hatch and fly take?

I am surprised that the internal circumference allowed the tool you have used to cut as deep through as it has without causing some trouble even though you have a rake/undercut.

                                                  Raymond

The hidden side of the blade shown is ground away almost to a knife edge which creates a bit more clearance on the OD of the annular groove. In addition I alternately raise and lower the blade (easy with a Dickson toolpost) as well as moving the cutter axially to two positions to widen the groove. Its not a precision process and I am not particular about observing precise rake and clearance angles so the method works for me.

Hello Geoff, I'm happy your door is fixed, I did the same to mine 20 years ago, only trouble is, the bottoms rotted now. (not mine, the door). I don't know what you can do about burglaries, If a burglar breaks into your home, he's likely to sue you if he trips and hurts himself.

Dozing in the sun this afternoon I heard an unusual jet type noise overhead. Exited the conservatory fairly rapid and had the pleasure of observing a deHavilland Vampire doing a fly past. A quick look on google told me that it is probably the last one flight worthy in the northern hemisphere. Where is it based though? I know that a chap on Cranfield airfield (a good few years ago) had a collection of Vampires, Venoms etc., I wonder if this was one of his.

While I'm at it I also remember a TSR2 being on display at Cranfield some years ago – does it still exist? What a lovely aircraft, such a shame it was kyboshed!

And rambling on, as I am only a stones throw from the Shuttleworth Collection I shall be looking forward to seeing a Vulcan bomber later this summer flying one of its last flights.

                                                      Rik (in reflective mood).
