        Ian,

May be time to take a link or two out of the drive belt!

I have run a parting tool down 8" diameter 6082 bar with few problems on my AUD much the same as you just extending the tool every 1/2" or so. Could have taken a trip to my mates barn and used my big horizontal band saw but that would have taken longer and I like a challenge.

        Bob.

I have taken two links out of the belt over the last few years but each time never seem to gain much improvement. Maybe I need a new belt really but will not now bother as I am getting a bigger lathe in the next couple of weeks.

Nervous day today, machining a back plate for a new chuck which needs an internal thread cut to suit/fit a 45mmOD x 3.5mm pitch male thread. The nervous bit was starting the internal thread – the first one I have done for 50 years I guess. Have got about ⅔ done so far before end of play for the day and so far have not made a horses bottom of it – fingers crossed for the completion!

Chris – Radio 2, plus Joe Cocker, Led Zep, Dylan, Santana, Stones, 1960's stuff………. and similar! At good volume! Plus dog free, so no doggy comments from me!

Don't worry Andrew we can make an exception for you, it would be good to see what you have been upto on teh traction engines though you could just show me at the weekend.

Today I have been designing, drawing and then machining, prototype plastic boxes on the Bridgeport, yawwwwn; but at least I got paid for it. thumbs up It make a change from designing electronics though.

For those that are not attending the meeting alluded to by JasonB I have also been doing a bit on the traction engines. First, I've finished the hollow pistons and rods, as recently described in 'Model Engineer':

            hollow_pistons.jpg

And I've been installing the dummy rivets on the hornplates and completing the steering gear:

            steering_gear.jpg

I have also been reading up on the theory of steam and thermodynamics, as a precursor to making an idiot of myself in my 'Theory' thread on the TractionTalk forum. smile

            Andrew

Edit: I never listen to music, or anything else, in the workshop; I find it grossly irritating as it interrupts my train of thought.

Depends what I am doing. There are times when I want to hear the machine and the noises associated with the material being cut.

At all other times I listen to the 'Smooth' radio station. Usually as loud as the amp will go.! devillaugh – I do however state that so far I have resisted dancing in the workshop. wink

I'll see if I can keep up with whats been happening here.

Dogs. …..Our Foxie is recovering after surgery two growths between a toe one in grown hair the other a grass seed. last days wearing his cone so not to lick or chew at stitches which come out Monday. Only days he allowed in the workshop is when the front garage door is closed and he sits up on my wheelchair snoozing while I do what ever.

OuBallie on 04/12/2014 & Rik Shaw Music well radio mainly a variety of stations depending on mood until I put a 2nd hand smaller better machine in which has a CD player as well. 1st Link

2nd Link as you like a bit of Country try some down under.

Ian Philips I like the way you think in planning that set up yes I hope to recall it if ever I need to attempt such.

Mechman48 Nice been using the one I made at school back in the 60's over the last few days a quick check of drill hole depth on job I am doing. like your chuncky block and large lock screw. it would suit my feeble hands beer.

Over the last few weeks been doing a array of quick jobs well for me they are.

Two new saw handles for my dad's old saws

                made a brass mallet

Two new hammer handles Ball peen and Claw

On making two NZ hiking stick brass screw adaptors. Bloke and his wife bought them 11 yrs ago had to cut the full lengths into 1/2 to bring them home to Australia. They are not cheap $120 each and sentimental value to them being it was their honey moon.

This will be my first screw thread cutting since the 70's and being Brass my first on a lathe frown taking it all slow.

Today, I thought I'd simply share my "Pintrest" page with you.

                  **LINK**

I use this site to gather inspirational pictures together for a future 2 wheeled project. Some of the bikes I really don't like, but there may be one particular detail in the way it's been built or modified that I've stored the picture for, perhaps its just a different approach.

My favourite is the Axtell Norton #65 – absolutely stunning.

I do love standard restored bikes, but you won't find many on that page, as it's not what it's about – I find it very difficult to look at a classic bike and imagine cutting it up for a custom, so only time will tell if I ever get the guts to give it a go (tastefully hopefully – some of those bikes are pretty larey – count me out on those !!)

EDIT* If you click on a picture and it tells you to log in or sign up – just press the Escape (Esc) key – unless you want to log in…… or, sign up …… obviously

Made a start fitting the garage/workshop insulated roller door, guides are not too bad to fit just a few holes into the brick work, plug and screw and then shim till plumb which is the time consuming part even with a large collection of plastic shims.

Heard a good one today of health and safety gone mad, went to Toolstation to get 8mm SDS drill and the guy there went off with his trolley to get one, apparently they have to use the trolley and wear gloves when picking items, how stupid is that!

And people wonder why industry in the west has closed down, and moved to the east. What is the penalty for not using the trolley and gloves?

Quite high to the employer when they make a claim for injury to their hands or back

Back injuries is the reason for bags of cement being 25kg not the old 112lbs and delivery drivers are not supposed to pick up any thing over 30kg or is that 25kg.

In a pub I used in the 70's there was a standing bet, if you could pick up the anvil, which weighed n excess of 2cwt and put it on the bar and take it back without putting it down you got £10.00 needless to say many tried most failed.

Bet you can not do that these days.

5" loco's are not light hate to think what my 2-8-0 is going to weigh, the 3.5" 2-6-2 is heavy enough.

Spent the morning hanging on, helping family member complain that the new sofa delivered this morning was broken in two places, so needs replacing. Gave up and sent email instead from their site.

£400 worth and not fit for purpose!

I think that must be an old "Anvil" Tradition Bob, At my Anvil Arms in Wold Newton, East Yorkshire, also in the seventies, if you carried it into the bar and back you got a free pint, If you could carry it round the pub and put it back on the stand out the front, free beer all night! Couldn't be the same pub could it?

Off she went putting on her gloves and pushing the trolley.

With regards lifting weight wasn't there an exemption for coal sacks – possibly 2cwt which is pretty staggering.

I think it proved you don't need a thou or more of clearance for retainer to work, I uses Truloc 268 high temperature retainer from Arc Euro and it took some decent heating and then the application of a 4lb lump hammer to get things to move. there was no way anything would move cold. The one joint was 1/2" long, but the other was only 1/4" long. this si very strong glue!

You've managed to confuse me, (maybe because you did not say what the items in question were)

How do you get a reamed bore 'on to' a tube? also if the bore is reamed where does the 'turning down' come from!

I agree modern adhesives work but if your 'decent heating' went over about 180c it would succumb pretty quickly.

It was the hollow spindle for my back gears. I'm not happy with the mesh on one gear, so I'm remaking it, which meant removing both gears from the tube, hollow with a phosphor bronze bush in each end. the gears were reamed 1/2" but the tube was oversize, so I had to turn it down to a push fit. Unfortunately, i only turned down one end of the tube, so to get the dodgy gear off, the other one had to come off first.

I heated the gears until the smaller one went 'pale straw', but I still had to apply brute force. I've made a new tube, slightly longer, and salvaged the bushes as they now have had a skim off the end (one of them was badly cut up by my brutality!)
