The Comet has now been quoted at 300 kgs per cu.mtr and it is suggested it would float on water. There is so much conjecture going on now and I would think it best to wait until Philae has landed and carried out sampling. Landing site decision will be made on Monday.

I'd like to see a diagram that shows what the gravitational field of such an odd-shape looks like.

The amount of structure is vastly more than I was expecting.

So, today I chopped up some bits of tube and made a stand for the Drill Press. Yes, it is upside down and looks weird but all will become clear tomorrow:

Started early and put the new stand in place, levelled it off and had prospective son in law (Handy big lad) give me a lift up with the drill press.

Now you can maybe see the theory behind the stand and those weird protrusions. I had to grind a little of the weld in the top right corner, it was a tight fit:

All I am waiting on now is the motor to arrive, hopefully it will be here Tuesday.

                    Very nice, Graham.

I fixed a broken 12V fluorescent fitting. After ages fruitlessly searching for another one to take the 'works' out of, I had a brain wave. Popped in two 12V white LED panels, now it's brighter and probably uses less current too!

Finally got finished moving house! this is the first time in over two weeks that I can use the computer, why is it BT can disconnect you in a heart beat, but take over two weeks to reconnect……

I still have most of the workshop equipment to move, I did manage to get the Harrison lathe the Mill drill the Clarkson grinder and the saw shifted, I'm still unsure if the Hiab will have the reach to place the Hurco close enough to wrestle it in the rest of the way, we shall see, one of the problems is a small Hiab will get under the tree but will it have enough lifting capacity, I need to lift 1750kg rollers are out most of the drive is gravel.

any thoughts / suggestions are welcome…..

                        Shaun,

You could move the machine with a teleport forklift, I hired one to lift a fuel tank over a garage weight was not an issue just the reach 7meters, the price including the driver was £85.00. You may find a local farmer with one who may well do the job for a few beer tokens.

Shaun, have you considered laying builders plywood sheets on the gravel then use rollers, you would need two sheets so you can move one forward as you go. Not sure of the weight of your machine but we used this method to move a Smart & Brown lathe weight 1 ton, worked just fine using scaffold tube as rollers. Good luck

He had 1750kg in his post hence the teleporter as I doubt very much that sort of weight on rollers on plywood would work never mind all the effort just to save a shilling!

Great believer in right tool for the job!

I will have 5 glulam beams 270mm x 90mm x 5mtrs to lift into place for the new workshop and intend to use a Hiab because I have access to one, could struggle with ropes etc………. sod that.

I ran my sm32 loco packed up on a baking tray with meths and water involved and the weather was hot and sunny, I really enjoyed it. Tomorrow I will be in Llandudno for the public running session on west shore on our new track.

                                parting 100mm cast iron.jpg

I have been playing with my new rear parting tool. First off, parting a 100mm diameter cast iron bar (adaptor plate to mount a chuck on my rotary table). Yes, the tool overhang is a bit silly, but I wanted to know whether it would do it…

Next up, do I have the nerve to part a steel bar using the power feed (and a shorter tool overhang)?

Painted house chimney cap. Pretty good view from 1200 ft asl. Not as good a job as I would like but running out of summer days. Wonder what age I will have to give up this sort of DIY caper – 75? Lit fire this evening – in August!

Looks like an HSS tool. Pretty impressive but I'm not sure I would have the balls to use power feed myself. I always use power feed with my indexable tool to get consistent (and sufficient) feed but usually during parting there are one or two "events" that would finish off an HSS tool, as the swarf decides which way to exit the work zone.

I wouldn't chance it it that overhang, plus you will end up with either a concave or convex surface on your parted off items, short overhang & rigidity is the name of the game, plus blade at right angles to the chuck

                                          Beauty sunny spring day 19C.
