Finally got the topslide angle setting device finished! Quite pleased, as it gave a maximum deviation over an ER25 collet length of 0.002 inch. Good enough for my purposes. A couple of photos from my album below:

      Setting the angle

Setting the angle.  Not easy to see in this photo, it says 9°.

Yes, I know an ER25 collet has a taper of 8°, but my lathe is 1° off level!

      Setting topslide angle

Rotate the device 90° and adjust the topslide parallel with the angled part. Hey presto, angle set!

      More photos in the album.

Sun's out, so I'm off to mow the orchard. (with apologies to Oubaillie!)

I'm fiddling about with an old Flexispeed lathe that uses short MT0 centres in both headstock and tailstock and I'd like to use my Myford to make some stub arbours. Ketan sells Standard MT0 to MT1 adaptors, which together with a 1-2 adaptor will allow me to fit a MT0 in the Myford spindle.

        mt02.jpg

Standard MT0 is far too long for the short MT0

        mt01.jpg

So I needed to cut down the MT0 socket. I've not tried using the Dremel as a toolpost grinder before but, with some trepidation I decided to try using a one of the Dremel cut off discs. (Incidentally, the Dremel nose thread is 3/4 BSF which I screwcut then tapped in the BDMS bar)

        mt03.jpg

With the lathe and Dremel contra rotating, it turned (!) out to be spectacularly successful.

        mt04.jpg

Flushed with success I dressed the corners

        mt05.jpg

And I now have a short MT0 to MT1 sleeve.

        mt06.jpg

Please forgive my enthusiasm, I had visions of the disc immediately smashing into shrapnel, I kept well out of the line of fire but no drama at all. smiley

        Cheers,

        Rod

I suspect that the secret of your success was the rigid fixing for the dermal and controlled feed of the slide. Any slight sideways pressure on these discs is invariably fatal for the disc. ( Believe me I know!) Always a good idea to wear some eye protection when using the Dremel but I've found that a bursting disc is annoying rather than traumatic!

Made a start on the building of new garage/workshop, will probably end up more workshop than garage but hopefully both.

Building new one around and over the old one, foundations should be dug out tomorrow with building inspector booked for Friday am. day 2.jpg

In the garage or workshop debate always bear in mind the fact that cars are waterproof!

Not all cars are waterproof, 99% may be, but my little 24 year sports car is better off in the dry.

Hi, cars with a left open sunroof aren't, like one I did many years ago. Luckily for me it was only a bit of drizzle and not a downpour.

                    JohnH,

                    Ingenious to say the least!

As usual, it took me some time to figure out, even with your description. Par for the course.

                    Ta for apologies, but ?

I do hate mowing, even thought it only takes me 10min.

Geoff – It's a wildlife garden (my excuse), so snakey must have found it to its liking!

Or our camper van. Investigation showed that a previous owner had tried to stop a leak by filling the outer drain holes in the bottom of the window w-channel with silicon. they hadn't blocked the middle holes and as the windows slope slightly in water drains down the glass into the outer channel, through the drain hole in onto the inner channel and overflows on the slightly lower inner side. At least it did last week, making for a a night or two with damp feet

Stepson and daughter demolished a raised bed and put it in a skip. Wife battled with the hedge from Sleeping Beauty. All while I was busy hand-crafting your next but one issue of MEW!

Cars dont leak, Oh yes they do! I had a Triumph Herald and and would step into the drivers seat and find the footwell full of water. It went back to the garage and they checked it and said its OK Now, famous last words as the next morning it was full of water again so i took out the rubber bungs in the floor! Then, checking the roof line I saw a little hole where the windscreen came up to the roof and I tipped in some water and there was water in the footwell again. Filled the hole and never had any more water problems, but, arriving at the house the car jolted to a halt and would not move. This proved to be the Differential where a shim had wound its way through the bearing and jammed it up, I ended up with a brand new Diff. I think the garage were definitely out of pocket with this car.

Thanks for that, been meaning to make a couple of these for a while now. Really useful on the Taig for grinding plastics/urathane but it would be – the Dremel that is – better held in a dedicated holder and not just my knuckles jammed against a toolholder

A slick setup to say the least. The reinforced cut off discs that are mow available for mini grinders seem to be quite durable even when hand held. **LINK** Not like those bonded discs that you had to buy by the hundred and waste by the dozen.

Loaded up the Nitro today with my accumulation of collectable salvage. Off to the scrap yard with the brass, copper and aluminum. Came away with $307 CAD. I am not a big fan of .556 mm (.223 Rem) semi-automatic rifles that many members of my shooting club take to the range. However, I am only too happy to collect the puddles of empty brass casings they leave behind on the ground. It doesn't take long to accumulate 100 – 150 lbs of the stuff and at the current $1.85/lb paid by the scrap dealer, it quickly adds up.

Had to do some repairs to the 4×6 bandsaw after cutting the V-blocks, belt cover had come adrift the screw under the pulley. Replace screw with longer one and new washer being an old 4th hand machine its well worn in some places and hadn't been taken care of. To wet n cold to continue with anything else so now indoors.

Had many a vehicle with leaky windows over the years not mine others i had to repair more so when seals were rubber, glass was poorly sized, frames out of alignment even from new. It happens a lot less now with heat sealed windows. still doors and seams around gaurds leak.

The Ruger Mini 14 in stainless steel, I had one until they were banned. A lovely weapon and I found it very accurate with reloads up to 300yds. When the ban came in I had it shipped to New Zealand for some lucky new owner to have. I also had a Ruger .308/7.62 with a Hensoldt scope worth more than the rifle new! I have always liked Ruger and also had a Ruger Black hawk and Ruger red Hawk in .44mag. Great times then but not nowadays. Stuck with a puny air rifle. I reloaded for everything I had.

Here is an interesting detail about the Comet now being assessed by Rosetta probe. The probe is doing a triangular orbit and as it flies a straight leg the Comets gravity deviates the flight path. This is measured by radio transmission time differences and in doing so they have been able to measure the Comets Mass. It is an unbelievable 10 Trillion kgs, equivelent to 10,000,000,000 metric tonnes, I would not like that to land in my back garden. It has now modified the idea that the Comets are just fluffy ice and dust.

That dumbell shape (engine in one part, crew in the other) has often been proposed for spacecraft…

The ESA Rosetta website is becoming quite busy now with an image of the Comet put up everyday. Also graphic shots of the probes path around the Comet describing the triangular orbit and why. Density of the Comet has been expostulated as like Pop Corn to iron or basalt rock. It is interesting to see landslides of debri in the neck of the Comet suggesting it has a positive gravity. If you browse the site go to the, 'Blog' which is on the right side of the first page. An estimate has been made of the total volume but as the bloger was using the sample of 2 spheres it could not be accurate.
