Hopefully I'm posting in the correct Forum – I'm new here.

I've got a Warco WM14DRO which I've blown the motor on. My own fault, I was pushing it too hard.

Unfortunately Warco won't won't have any replacement motors for 12 weeks. I've tried replacing the motor end cap (which they did have in stock) but that didn't help and I've since confirmed a winding fault.

Does any one know of a suitable drop in replacement from another supplier? I've seen plenty that look the same but I can't find the correct wattage. The Warco label says it is a 93-ZYT004C (240V, 500w, 5000rpm and 2.0 amp). I'm happy replacing the horsepower resistor in the control board if needed for a different wattage motor but I'd like some confirmation of one that works.

Failing that can anyone recommend a rewinding specialist?

Hads the same problem with my WM14, allbeit non-dro and about 9 years old. (So assuming the motor is still the same type? i.e. has brushes?). When mine went due to overwork, I fortunately got a Warco replacement from stock in a few days.

I would think a rewind would be a costly operation, but a simple motor of that size and power would be easily available via an internet search? Sorry that's not direcly helpful in your current situation just an opinion.

One thing I would say however is that when you replace it, to look at the cooling of the motor housing in that model. The closed box with small louvres at the rear does little to stop overheating if working hard (the winding insuation melted in mine!) I cut a large hole in the top of the case (adding a protective mesh over it) and it seems a lot happier. I've seen a number of postings where people have done similar or even adding powerful 'computer' cooling fans also.

Best of luck, 12 weeks is a pain to wait, but only the same length of time as awaiting a second Covid vaccination!

Just a thought, ArcEuroTrade carry spare motors for their range of lathes and mills. They're Sieg machines but they might share components with Warco types.

Their stocks can be seen on-line.

With respect to cooling I would add that these motors are sold for hobby use and are not intended for constant or running over an hour, you need to enquire about the duty cycle.

                Graeme,

Have you tried Amadeal? They do a similar machine to the Warco….or Chester machine tools?

Fair comment Dave. I had ignored signs that I was overworking it as was desperate to get a job finished, so no one to blame but myself. However, when looking into info on motor failures, it struck me how many other people had tried a 'fix' like that I mentioned so I assumed (possibly wrongly) it was a common fault as opposed to 'user error' which in reality was probably more relevant!

                  Regards

Thanks for the replies. Amadeal, ArcTrade and Chester Machines are all on my list of options. Unfortunately they seem to use brushless 600w motors but I can always try. I've learned a lot about DC motors and control circuits over the last few days!

I've seen the posts about cooling and plan to fit a large fan when I get it back up and running.
