I wonder if anyone can help me ? I need a small piece of steel tube. 68mm o/d, 65mm i/d 70mm long. I have scoured through all of the steel suppliers, both tube and pipe, every last advert in Fleabay but to no avail. I know the size is or was manufactured as I have two pieces, but I need three for the job. I have got a nice piece of 75mm round, but to convert most of it to swarf would be heartbreaking. I will pay a fair price plus carriage. Please look in your offcuts boxes. Thankyou.

          Roger,

          M-Machine list 2.75 o/d with a 1/4" wall…….but its expensive at £ 28/foot

So, does your solid bar now look a better proposition?

            Roger,

What about a gas or water fitting from the plumbers merchants and turn that to size?

            Regards
            Brian

              Brian,

The nearest to what is required would be sched 10 pipe, if available…..

Roger, are there any piping suppliers in your locale?

Thanks for the information. I have Emailed M-Machine for a quote.

Schedule 10 pipe at 2 1/2" nominal does not give me enough metal to achieve my desired size, and the other sizes are way off..

                Hoping M-Metal can help.

                Thankyou.

I cut a Co2 Mig gas bottle in half yesterday to make an engine silencer…. and it's not quite the right size ! 70 x 65.5 !

You may want to try http://www.aircraftspruce.com . The sell a lot of 4130 seamless tubing and may have what you are looking for.

What about trying a car exhaust shop? Do you have places like that, or do you just buy made up exhaust pipes, here the make them up on the spot.

dunno if it will work for what you need.

but once scored odd shaped lump of ali.

went in from each end with hole saw and ended up with pce of rd for job i needed just needed cleaning up.

might work with your rd stock and you will kave smaller dia pce of rd stock after.

Still no answer from M-Machine,perhaps the order is too small for them. I did try the exhaust pipe route but there is no thickness that suits. I cam across another weird anomoly as well,I need some 19mm x 1mm angle iron. There are dozens of suppliers who sell 19mm x 1mm angle clips but no one sells it by the metre. I wrote to a couple of the clip suppliers but they couldn't help. Someone makes the clips and must start with 19mm angle ?

Unless they start with 38mm strip and bend it after cutting ?

I had some slices of the hot finished seamless tube off them (to make tyres for my 5" gauge Castle) around six months ago and cannot fault their service for such a small order (to them).

I have a piece of steel tube which is there or thereabouts for your requirements. How specific are the dimensions? I've only just done a quick dash to the shed and put a plastic vernier on it but if you are interested, I can do a more accurate check tomorrow. The tube is a 'pull' from a Shopmate radial arm saw and (to my eyes) is a rather nice piece of material. PM me if you need more info.

As mentioned above, I have now more accurately measured the tube referred to and photos below.img_9110.jpg

                                  img_9111.jpg

Photos to show the modifications to the tube – keyway and attachment holes.

The measurements are Imperial 'cos I can't find my metric vernier!blush

                                  Tube diameter – 3.01"

                                  Wall Thickness – 0.305"

                                  Overall length – 17"

Distance top to start of keyway – 6"

                                  Keyway length – 9"

                                  Keyway depth – 0.3"

The keyway does pose a problem but someone with John Stevenson's ability to convert 'Sow's Ears into Silk Purses' could undoubtedly make the full length useable.

If this is of any use please let me know.

Driving along this morning to buy yet another disposable co2 bottle…. I was thinking a road sign post looks a similar size !!! There doesn't seem to be a standard… thin ones …fat ones..

                                    I didn't have a vernier either !

                                    Disposable fire extinguisher?

New temporary road works signs look to be a  source of 20 mm box …  wink
