Vee belt / Poly Vee belt maximum power

Does anyone have formulas or guide books to tell how much power different belts can transmit? Interested in finding how many belts over how large a pulley I would need to transmit 2HP.

The power delivered by a belt drive depends on the speed of rotation, as well as the tension the belt can stand, and the amount of friction between the belt and the pulleys. So, it might seem that the faster you go, the more power you can transmit, with the same set-up. True, but only up to a point. The tension in the belt is increased by centrifugal force as the speed rises, and so this places a limit on how fast for given pulley sizes. And of course, the pulleys are also under strain, and can explode if the rpm is too high. That's why a simple formula cannot be supplied. In the words of the prophet, it all depends …

Lots of links come up. I'd do sums from more than one.

I'd guess from a space point of view Poly V will win out as it's more flexible than the usual V belts in all but very small sizes. This is why I suspect it's being widely used in washing machines lawn mowers and many other things. V belts need a certain size of pulley to transmit a given torque or more than one belt. As with V belts the belt lap angles should matter but I believe rollers can be used in the same sort of way as they are on toothed belts.

2 HP? Easy. Only one belt in most situations. The pulley size or fitting of a jockey pulley might be a limiting factor. More important is axial bearing loading and/or slippage in most applications. Ask the belt supplier for pertinent details.

Only need one poly vee in any situation, I would think. I have a couple of poly vee belts that were originally used for transmitting around 150 HP each. Pulley diameter might also be a limit as any belt will have a minimum curvature limit. Easier to make a uniform poly vee than supplying matched V belts.

Not wanting to high jack this topic, But I to am interested in a Vbelt for my 2hp motored milling machine,

I have a Tom Senior Major (the major having a 2hp motor)

I have stripped the mill inc the main spindle, so I want to replace the V belt at the same time,

I am wanting to know, Are all V belts made equally ???

Were would I buy a quality V belt for the main spindle ?????

It came with a link type belt and I dont personly like them (dont wish to explain why, I just dont)

Lots of info. on V belts and polyV. For our sort of usage you can usually go well over for power ratings etc. As an example my rotavater has a standard small section V belt ( 3/8" )?. This can transmit from a 6hp petrol engine and has been for two years.

Piero, if you have a power transmission company locally pop in with the link belt, they can measure it and supply you with a Vee belt to do the job. I do not like link belts either, but they can get you out of trouble.

I remember reading somewhere that a link belt gives a smoother drive on a Myford with a 1ph motor. That's not relevant to me but I've got a PowerTwist belt waiting in a drawer for my A profile V belt to give up the ghost- it's looking pretty tired. I really don't want to disturb the spindle if I don't have to.

I know the sizes I need as I am lucky enough to have two tom seniors,

ones a M1 and the other is a Major.

The M1 is running on all original belts

I am taking apart the tom senior major for a clean and freshen up etc etc

As I have the main spindle out of the coloum, I may as well go back to the original V belts from the link belt that some one has fitted
