Turning paxolin

Been making a couple of disks from 1/4 inch paxolin. The tool traverses from right to left and as it leaves the left hand side a small amount of delamination takes place. Not serious for this application just not a tidy job. But how do I avoid this happening – turn from each end towards the middle perhaps. Or is there a better way?

You could place a sacrificial piece of wood or maybe metal behind it to support the edge.

I think those are the two ways – back up the piece with another piece of waste stock or cut from both sides to the middle.

I used a piece of chip board as a backing when turning sections for my traction engine brake blocks in Tufnol. Mike.

The first gear I cut, using a single point fly cutter was a Paxolin (or similar) one, I placed the Paxolin between two 3/16" thick steel discs, and as there was room on the finished job (a water pump), I left the steel parts in place, twenty years on and it's still working ok.
