Toolpost holders with morse tapers

A chap on another forum i am on just bought a little used colchester lathe, it did not come with tool holders, just the central toolpost (dickson type). Anyway he bought a few and a conversation developed about why there are tool holders available for the dickson system that have a morse taper hole rather than a slot to clamp a tool.

As a turner myself i have never had the need to hold a mt tool anywhere but the tailstock, and have never come across them in any workplace i have been.

Anyone know what is the intended use of these tool holders ?

Also on another forum this has been discussed. They allow MT drills and other tooling to be power fed using the carriage. The value of this then got discussed with some doubting its efficacy and others recounting how they had used it in practice.

Multifix do a morse taper holder to go along with their toolposts.

I would think they would have to be used carefully as I would imaging if used for drilling they would have to be dead on center with both axis and height or they would snap the drill bit in half a heart beat.

Edit :- Just read up on them and it seems that some boring bars are an MT taper holding fit for which they are intended.

My 2mt Dickson holder came with my first Colchester,it is useful to be able to drill off the saddle when working on large batches of tough material,I also mount an old tapping head in the 2 mt holder, the tapping head with its ability to grip taps without slippage makes tapping easy and also it reduces the use of the tailstock,a lot of lathes are ruined by worn out tailstocks, Some precision toolroom lathes eg Holbrook had precise saddle attachments for drilling and a plate on the tailstock engraved " do not drill from the tail stock" A lot of precision plain lathes have relatively small tapers in the tail stock,to prevent the tailstocks being ruined by the use of large drills .

There are/were MT boring bars available which (I think) is what the holders were designed for… There is a through hole for a draw bar/bolt.

I thought I'd revive this thread to ask: Is there a difference between a Morse Taper adapter (Say mt 3 down to 2mt) or will all morse tapers fit within one another?

Briefly I want to be able to use my tooling for mt 2 from Micro mill and use it with the mt 3 Mini mill.

You need a 2 to 3 (which is like a sleeve) rather than a 3 to 2 which is a big socket on the end of a small taper.

Ok so I order a 2 to 3 so the outside fits the morse in the Mini and the tools I have fit inside that.

An open ended adaptor 2-3 MT would be better so that the draw bar passes through to hold the tooling.

This one an OPS1 also has an ejection ring.

Got mine from Chronos, just a satisfied customer.

I would expect the MT tool holder to accept a tang MT so that drills can be slapped in with no rotation just like a tail stock. If that's the case drawbar may not go through to accept Dennis picky above intended for spindles with through hole.

Do have open ended MT 2-3 sleeves some where never used them. No good for MT drills they require a tang type MT and cant be ejected in the Harrisons and Colchesters tail stock without a strip down. Better off buying specific MT2 or MT3 tooling to suit.

Need more MT2-3 and MT1-3 tang type you can never have too many.
