        Hi All,

For some reason to day we were about 15minutes earlier than usual at our Sunday car boot, barely anyone there and the house clearance guys were just setting up.

Just as I approached one van, the driver and his mate were struggling to get this out of the back:

        adams 1.jpg

Could not believe my eyes so bought it immediately for a bit off his asking price as he did not want to have to lift it back if not sold! Has its treadle, flywheel and a bunch of tooling with another box he did not put on the van this week so have to go to Yeovil to collect.

        adams 2.jpg

        adams 3.jpg

I cannot wait to get some help to get it out of my car and have a good look at it.

Funny thing was there was nothing else of much interest anywhere so we would have been very disappointed after a 90 minute drive to spend so little if this had not come up.

        Cheers, Martin

          Wow! Well Done!

It looks as if well used and cared for, and until very recently; so it's good it's found a similar new home.

There is quite a bit about the make, filed under " Adams George " , on Lathes.co. I couldn't see one that matched, but I may simply have missed a section. If that is "Emerald Green " it is the original colour, too. Quite a range of accessories were available, so maybe in that box still in Yeovil…

Well done! Can we have some more photos when you have set it up please.

Hoping for some pleasant surprises for you when you collect the box!

I think you'll get more joy searching for Pittler lathes, looks like a re-badge job to me.

Am I just paranoid, I never find things like this at car boots. The nearest I ever got to a bargain was a Dobie McInnes indicator. The chap obviously didn't know what it was, so I made him and offer and went for a walk round to give him time to think about it. When I went back he'd packed up and gone.

The Pittler lathe on that page is the exact one the OP has just bought. Got the same marks and scratches.

Hi Pete, you are dead right, just been out and took a pic of the tailstock complete with blob of white paint! What are the odds on that?

I can’t wait to get it out of the car and set up. I have the flywheel, treadle and a unit with two wooden drawers that slides under the main part, all pretty heavy and awkward to lift.

Not sure yet what to do with it as we just do not have the room for another ‘toy project’ as The War Office calls them!

Currently need what free space we have to build the 75 x 2000 linisher I got plans of and now being water jetted.

will update when I have it out and assembled.

                      cheers, Martin

An interesting find, a pattern B lathe on a tri leg stand, these also came on a trumpet stand.

I can see it's a type without back gear which on Pittler B lathes is inside part of the pulley casing. I'm not sure if that type came with a dividing head but it was originally issued with 17 gears & 3 worms plus other accessories. I have Pittler catalogues showing all the information on these and other literature.

I have a Pittler B2 with overhead drive etc with lots of rare accessories, I made a very detailed Google website showing all the various parts etc

I shall study it in detail and let you know what I find if/when the guy comes up with the missing box of parts, fingers crossed.

Are you by any chance based down South?

An Adams-badged Pittler? Good suggestion. I looked only at Adams entry in Thje Scriptures, but did notice it says Adams were involved in a lot of badge-engineering.

                              Martin –

Do tell us how you get on with those water-cut parts. A lot of model-enginers now now use plasma-cut blanks but these tend to have hard edges. Water-jet cutting seems still new to us.

Hi Martin, very nice, whatever badge is on it. I drove through Yeovil at around this time of the year, back in 1979 to get to Ilminster for a two day Powermatic Service Course at Powermatic Ltd. The drive was in a hired Austin Allegro, one of the worst cars I've ever driven. My navigator took us all around everywhere it seemed on the way there, but I decided on a better and faster route on the way home along the A303 and then onto the Northern ring road to the A1, my navigator wasn't keen going through the outskirts of London, but as he wouldn't do any driving I said you either come with me or get a train home, he soon changed his mind, about 6 hours home instead of 8 hours going.

                                Regards Nick.

Nigel, I have had quite a lot of projects water jet cut with great success:

Slitting blade cutters for rare planes, Preston spokeshave cutters, currently having 50 plane clamps cut from machined blanks of gauge plate.

The linisher project is by far the biggest with one part being cut from 100mm ally sheet!

as you say there is no edge heating which is great for cutters etc.

                                  cheers, Martin

I live in Worcestershire, I hope you get some more stuff in the box, the gears are most & worms are important. Your lathe has the George Adams plate so would not be as old as mine, yours would be around 1905

My lathes previous owner had it in a tiny shed for a number of years but he never got it up & running, it was a right struggle to get it out and it's extremely heavy.

It's also shown on the Lathes.co.uk website from yet another previous owner, the last photo at the end of the Pittler page

ChrisH, Yeovil Car Boot is every Sunday from 1300 hrs at the Yeovil Showgound, £2 per car; early buyers pay £8 per person each to get in at 1100hrs, rather than pay that we put a table and box of junk in the car and pay the sellers fee of £7!

Mind you, I am not saying that was where the lathe came from………😊

Next Sunday is the first Shepton Mallet Flea Market for quite a while so we will be looking to fill our boots then!

lathe still in the car as our 2 neighbours are both away!

                                        cheers, Martin

                                              Hi All,

Finally got it out of the car this morning, it is bloody heavy! Assembled the main parts:

                                              adams1a.jpg

                                              adams 2a.jpg

                                              adams 3a.jpg

Here are the main bits and pieces with it so far:

                                              adams 4a.jpg

There is this weird broken Bowden cable hanging loose:

                                              adams 6a.jpg

The flywheel is ENORMOUS and very heavy, treadle part is also with it.

                                              adams 5a.jpg

                                              adams 7a.jpg

The head stock has a draw bar that does not seem to screw into the chuck so not sure how the chuck comes on or off?

The small drawers contain a lot of collets and some very nice gear cutters and other bits and bobs. I have been in contact with the guy I got it from and we will try and fit in with him to get the other parts even if it means another long drive.

I think that I will just clean all the gunk from it and brighten up the metalwork a bit, something very gentle.

                                              Cheers, Martin

Looks very nice, it's a plain turning model B so no screwcutting which use gears & worms not used on model B. This type is far less commonly seen however.

The draw bar is for 8mm collets & other similar fittings, the chuck is a metric thread so just like any make of old lathe it might be difficult to unscrew.

Pittler lathes used a mix of metric & imperial threads on lathes exported to the UK, draw bar threads are metric but bolts are imperial Whitworth, at least they were in the early days,

I can see two parts of the dividing head, but the main casting is not visible so for some reason it was dismantled, see my website for how it should look assembled. Original equipment should include a travelling steady also.

It looks like the Bowden cable goes to the back and operates the clutch, was this standard?

What was the bit of bent alloy sheet at left of headstock for? It is very battered?

One oiler has lost its cover so will make another.

I have made a start cleaning the odd bit and it looks like it will come up very well with a bit of effort.

                                                    Cheers, Martin

                                                      Regards Nick.
