I've just got a turntable again ( for LP etc. ). Found most of my records are badly in need of cleaning. I was reading about ultrasonic cleaning baths and thought maybe would be good for records. However can't afford to buy one big enough. Question – would a sub ultra work ? Thinking of just putting a bowl on top of an old large speaker and filling with warm water and washing up liquid. I guess a high pitch sound would be best. I know even less about music than about electronics. Any thoughts anyone ?

You don't need to do that. Simply wash them in warm water with a little Fairy Liquid or similar, rinse under a warm tap and leave to dry preferably in a plate rack.

I still use my collection of LPs and that is how I have cleaned them for the last 40 years.

You need to get the high frequency sound matched into the water – if there is an air gap between the speaker and water there will be a large "mismatch" and I doubt much energy would be coupled in.. But worth a try perhaps.

You should probably use deionised water, you don't want limescale being left on the record as it dries.

Actually I would recommend getting one of these.

They have carbon fibres that clean into the grooves and being conductive remove static as well. My son is now into vinyl too and has one of these. Not ultrasonic but seems to get good reviews.

Don't forget water will destroy the label! I think the 'ferris wheel bath' John suggests sounds a good idea.

Most record cleaners use, or used, IPA as the solvent. My local 'vinyl' dealer initially washes in a mild detergent, then gives them a final cleansing with a record cleaner containing isopropyl alcohol.

Thanks for the replies. Trouble is my discs ( notice that ?) are pretty bad. I've tried washing and carbon brush, some still bad. Googling has found some ideas- for really bad dirt spread with PVA glue and peel off when dry ? Labels seem to be well stuck, must have used good glue in the old days. Have lost a couple of price labels ,7/6d . Will look at the links later , very slow computer now.

For those keen enough to spend a few hundred pounds/dollars to maintain their record collection, it would seem that ultrasonic cleaning is an extremely effective solution.

For further details, diyAudio has a long thread devoted to this topic: diyAudio – My version of an Ultrasonic Record Cleaner

Shouldn't this be in Albums ?

Maybe we could try for a record for the number of replies to this thread?….

                        I'll get me coat….

A good sense of humour, Hacksaw. But should you not be in the 'tools' section only?smiley

Not sure where some might want to put me (for not making a Status entry), mind!

Singles have been better for me in the last couple of days.  A fiver for a pile of LPs but 25 for some singles.  I only wanted to get them out of the way, anyway!

I'm getting needled by this sort of disc-ussion.. Its a long-playing problem and I think its time to turn-tables on forum members who can't stick to the groove. If they don't like the platter on offer they can find another place for their CD habits.

A few years ago some kids asked me at our museum if the box thing with the crank, and a big disc on it(78rpm) was an oldfashoned CD player?

Great to see your post, there is another thread on here about the Quake and people asking whether you are OK.
