I bought a unopened set of ST beam engine parts not direct from a dealer , a private sale , I already had some of the castings part machined bought off Ebay . The older ones look like cast iron and machine easily , The newer ones look silvery and are as hard as can be , a file just skates over them , I have been trying to machine the beam casting on a Colchester Bantam and that makes heavy weather of it . I havnt tried tugsten tools . I tried heating to dull red and slowly cooling , to no effect , Has anyone else had this problem ? Is it possible to soften them ? I cant complain to ST because I didn't purchase from them , but I certainly would if I had .

      regards Phil

          .

Do you mean 'silvery' like the valve chest in this image :-

The kit I have just bought from them seems to have a mixture of old and new.

I have however just nipped into the workshop and had little trouble filing a rough spot on it. If I do have any complaints it's that some of the castings are very marginal on size to the point that the drawings supplied have to be tweaked.

            hello

my new ones look a bit like the valve chest you have , but my fly wheel is different from yours ( and the older one I have ) the spokes are round and the rim is scalloped out beteen the spokes

Thats a different size/style flywheel to the 7" beam one.

You need more than dull red and when you get it upto bright read hold it there for a good 20mins. Carbide will also help.

Yes that is one of the later flywheels with the six nasty "lumps" inside the rim. I'm not sure why they added these, may be something to do with joining two together for the wider flywheel on teh twin vioctoria. Best thing to do is turn them away, these two originally had the lumps.

And this is an earlier casting that had a thicker rim without the web and no lumps
