Various chocolate boxes and tubs come out of the kitchen for these round things. Also good for horizontal mill cutters. Eg cutter goes in cheese triangle box with antirust paper, several of those go in a coffee granules tub.

Grinding wheels should be stored vertically in a purpose made rack.

That's what I thought and how we used to store them at my old place.

But looking at images on Google see some pictures where they are mounted on pegs on board.

Stored vertically on a rack; if there are signs of damp on them they need to be rotated & dried out otherwise they will be out of balance when used.

If using soluble oil on say a surface grinder, turn the soluble off and leave the machine running for 1/2 hour before switching off.

So what should one do if you have stored a wheel flat for a few years? Use it or chuck it?

Use it, but some will say chuck it. It's your choice.

Give it a ring test first to make sure there are no minute hairline cracks anywhere… if it rings like a bell…ok… if it gives a dull dead sound… smash it up & bin it.

Surely a dry wheel won't come to harm stored flat? They keep them flat in the shop…

Absolutely correct, but a wheel should always be 'rung' before use whether stored vertically, horizontally or hung on wooden pegs. I have seen wheels stored in all three formats with no problem, just treat them with respect.
