I watched this recently Vic, not so sure about the grinding wheel in the mill (!), the safety aspects make me cringe and watch with one eye closed. Am making a modified version of Mike Checkley's vice end stop from the last issue of MEW then use the spindex in my surface grinder – plan to use a section of hacksaw blade as the flute "stop", can then rotate and onto the next flute without any changes (the blade should flex out of the way).

I originally posted this around the year 2000.

It's a staged shot and I never made one but I know a few who have. Basically, chequebook engineering by buying a Spindex, one of those cheap compound tables and a bench grinder.

Or utilising any of the above if already owned.

The Spindex sits on a piece of angle iron which needs remaking as a proper bracket.

The house brick supporting the grinder is optional.

Seriously something like this could be cobbled up easily in a weekend instaed of the statuatry 7 years to work up the enthusiasm to build a Quorn.

A hacksaw blade may be too stiff. A feeler gauge blade may be a better option if your flute stop is a short one.

Prof. Chaddock's 'Building the Quorn' has a photo of the head being used on a vertical mill to make a poor man's surface grinder. He also suggests using double sided sticky tape as a substitute for a magnetic chuck…
