      Hi all.

I'm curious to know what people use to seal their smokeboxes? I'm having a little difficulty with my Simplex, the holes at the bottom of the smokebox where the pipes pass through. I did use "fireclay", courtesy of Screwfix.. I have a ruddy great tub of the stuff of which I only used a "smear"… but after a number of runs its become brittle, cracked up and has now all disappeared (probably up the hoover!) Has anyone else used such stuff… do I need to use it heavily and thick???? or is there an alternative which has some degree of flex??

      Cheers… Del.

          Hi Del,

Car exhaust jointing compound works well.

Many people use ordinary silicon sealer. It seems to stand up ok. There are high temperature versions if your concerned about using the ordinary stuff.

                Hi Derek

Yes the best thing to use is silicon sealer what is used for sealing windows it has to be heat resistant and fire proof to comply with building regs

                Regards

                Stan

                  hi derek,

i wont rely on fireclay etc.

instead i make the holes for the steam pipe and exhaust/blastpipe a close fit, thread same all the way down and fit curved washers and threaded nuts to cover any gaps. there is then no possibility of sealant or fireclay to really as a sealant. instead a mechanical fixing being preferred.

it is always possible to add an extra plate on the bottom of the smokebox to achieve the above.

                  cheers,

                  julian
