As a beginner re: 45mm/G gauge I could do with a pointer or two. Can some one recommend supplier/s of small brass pipe fittings for my loco boiler – unions, cones etc. I will be using 1/8" diameter copper pipe. EPK have some of the stuff I need but not all.

I'll also need a water sight glass approx 40mm between centres – is such a thing available or are you expected to buy the glass and make your own?

      Any advice much appreciated.

      Rik

Have a look at the right hand side of this page … shopping partners… Macc Models…they seem to have a good selection of steam fittings… as for the sight glass, I am of the impression that you buy a length of tubing & cut it to suit your requirements.

            Rik,

Be aware that theoretically brass is not a good material for boiler fittings due to zinc being leached out leaving a spongy copper matrix that is weak and prone to failure! You should use gunmetal or bronze. However practically I think most of the commercial suppliers seem to use brass, certainly those that I have purchased in the past seem to be brass. They should be fine as long as you inspect them regularly and replace any that are going an orange colour.

            Paul.

Yorkshire model engineering supplies… jbboyce@jbboyce.karoo.co.uk…. no web site but plenty of steam fittings in their listing.

                  Hi Rik,

I have used the K&S range of copper thinwall pipe for many years, available at most model shops in the UK.

I make all my own fittings plus cones and union nuts etc. As a result, I can tailor make everything to much finer 'scale' sizes and far more 'scale' than off the shelf commercial fittings, and also at a fraction of the cost.

I would encourage anyone to 'have a go' at making their own. The results should look far better than commercial fittings.

                  Cheers,

                  Julian

Thanks for your tips chaps. I can get most of what I want from your recommended vendors and what I can't buy I will make myself.
