I just bought a new ZX30 here in Australia and was wondering if there were any webpages on generally setting up a new mill, starting with advice on the best means to remove the red packing grease. Thanks.

I cleaned mine out with some petrol on a rag. I did see a pdf on setting up a mill somewhere when I was researching mine. Could have been on ARC website.

The Arc Euro Trade article is very good, but I would take issue with their use of a copper-based grease as a form of lubricant.

 

This type of grease is actually an anti-seize compound and is more suited for use in hostile conditions where corrosion is likely to make subsequent dismantling difficult – it doesn’t have very good lubricating properties and I’d suggest a spot of oil or general pupose grease is used in its place on that machine.

Also, the X3 guide suggests taking the spindle out of the bearings using a press, to ease them and regrease; I know in some cases this is not necessary so I suppose it’s a case of seeing how well it rotates beforehand. I know of one who has not needed to do this but I don’t know what other X3 owners have found.

I use Superlube grease and spray which I find very good. It’s available from

I agree with Martin, the copper based greases are meant for bolting, they provide controlled lubrication when tightening and assistance when breaking out bolted joints that have been in service some time.

I have a small selection of greases (including some ‘Golden Film’ I bought in 1983 when my only concern was keeping my bicycle on the road). I tend to use Castol Molybdenum Sulphide grease for most things as it keeps lubing even when/if it goes dry.

 

The best grease I ever had was Finish Line Teflon for mountan bikes – waterproof and very ‘slippy’ – very clean to use too, not like moly grease!
