I saw a car like that once, an old standard I think, not a flake of paint but still intact

It had been sitting in a cave on the Isle of Arran for about 40 years

Perhaps it has been used as a boat anchor by a super adept owner. Must have been a very corrosive atmosphere to have stripped it so comprehensively or maybe a fire but can't have been too hot as all the alloy and aluminium is intact.

I thought "fire damage" but the plastic knob survived.

Coastal, humid, probably warm. We see a lot of it here in the coastal wet tropics, by the sea, temps in the 90s year round, humidity in the 80-100 per cent range most of the year. 1970s vintage motorbikes frequently turn up in similar shape to the posted lathe, even when stored under cover. It's a crying shame for want of a squirt of WD40 once in a while. I've seen a couple of BMW R90S's my mate picked up in similar condition. So bad the alloy parts such as brake levers and casings were flaking apart and delaminating to the point of being useless.

I love this line in the eBay listing: "was working but not used for many years" as if a scrub with a wire brush and you'll be turning out 5" gauge locos in no time.

Sadly, I have to relinquish my claim to owning the world's most abused ML7 now. He wins hands down.

What is it with the Myford name that makes people want to bid on an item that surely can only have scrap value?

Looks to have been stood in a marine environment for years and it looks like it includes a lump of driftwood, possibly the box of bobs bits has some valuable items in it but I would not want to find out.

Maybe the sellers opinion that they 'think it will be OK when its cleaned up' has some influence.

Technically speaking the eBay definition of that item is that it is fully operational and functions as intended!

Surely one can salvage gears, crosslide, pulleys, covers and so on. It's hard to tell but it doesn't look too pitted. With regards to the price of myford spares these days, I am sure with some work you can make some money on this piece, or save money depending on your preference. In fact I would use it to practice scraping the bed, would be a fun exercise.

The postcode is Reading so not coastal, just a damp barn or perhaps under an official Myford plastic cover . Interesting how the alloy bits stand out now.
