regulator material

I am starting to make a screw down regulator for a small loco , What materials would be best for the valve ? Bronze for the base and stainless for the taper part was what I was thinking of What do others use ?

Thanks David , I will carry on with that set up then # I take it that the valve seat is bored straight through and not tapered ?

Hi Phil,

Yes, the bore for the seat is straight though, no taper. For the thread on the valve, I used a 1/2"-13. When you turn the regulator handle, it is full open at about 1/4 turn. I made it a right hand thread, as I wanted the regulator to open when you turn the handle anti-clockwise. Farther than this does not really change the steam flow. This is the drawing for the regulator in my Super Simplex. – David

yes , that's the drawing I am working from , scaled down , Its for a big boiler Tich . Thanks for that link , very useful . ( and interesting )
