Record Vice Numbers

I've just found a Record 84 quick release vice in the workshop I'd forgotten I had.It's got 4½" jaws and is in good condition.

I asked a mate the other day what the different model numbers m,ean on these vices and he didn't know, does anyone on the forum know?

Hi Philip ,I have my Great Grandfathers Record vice from the 1890's.He was a black smith as was my Grandfather

!t has 5 1/4" .jaws ,7" opening quick release and is a no 24 .I have used this for much of my life as my father had no interest in mechanical work. there is no rust just a black patina and in good condition for its age.

I do not know what the numbers refer to but if there are enough answers to the question maybe it will become clear

Hi I also have a number 84 41/2" wide jaws open to 6". no anvil on rear

I suspect they are at least as meaningful as Chanel No. 5 or Castlemaine XXXX.
