My father in law always says husband dad used to resharpen that type of safety razor blade by rubbing it around the inside of a straight sided drinking glass. I can imagine it honing the edges a little but not doing a great deal. A razor strop and crocus compound was the weapon of choice for straight razor honing.

Blades are so cheap there’s probably no point in buying a device for restoring them. Unless you’re from Yorkshire and have a face like leather lol.

Regards, old leather face from Barnsley.

Frankly … the best “sharpener” I have ever found, is to flip the blade over after every use.

          .

P.S. after years of using ‘Merkur’ blades, I have now swithed to the Japanese ‘Feather’ brand.

I have a merkur tash razor and it  feels like being shaved with a hatchet lol.

My main razor uses the traditional safety razor blade and I use personna blades, but feather are good too.

Didn’t the ancient Egyptians use Pyramids?

Just grow a beard.I’ve had mine for 50+ years, must have saved a fortune on razors and blades, not to mention time. Only times I’ve shaved it off, SWMBO said I had to shave it off before we got married then asked if it would grow back in time for wedding, then when I worked in a paticularly unpleasant area of Sellafield where you to wear a respirator, daughter cried when she saw me first time. Not that I’m particularly ugly you understand

I remember my dear old dad had one of these gadgets.

It was intended to strop the wicked looking blade back and forth to “sharpen” it.

It was probably the definitive answer to the lack of razor blades during WW2.

I don’t recall him ever expressing a love for the thing in the 50’s or 60’s

My current cheek mowing tech is a wet/dry philishave – it works a treat !

                    Ah.

                    Rolls Razor.

My godfather used to swear by the one he had. My father swore at the one he tried and sold it on after about a month.

Actually excellent devices if your bear is suitable but totally intolerant of poor sharpening technique. According to godfather you had to stick rigidly to the advised schedule and methods or the edge would become misshapen and no power on earth would restore it.

Factory recon services not being offered.

I imagine given a factory fresh example and a surface grinder a skilled craftsman might be able to bring an abused one back but the sharpening and honing system is geometry specific with only limited wear tolerance on the blade before it all goes wahooie shape. That said to my certain knowledge godfather got over 50 years out of his, it outlasted him, so they must have gotten something right.

Shaving is funny. In electric razor days Dad and I could get a good shave with Phillishave rotating head razors but not with a foil type (Remington et al). Brother got nowhere with a Philishave but Remington did just fine “I see why he bought the company.”.

20 odd years ago electric razors stopped working well for me so I had to go blade type. After some experimentation it turned out that Gillette Mach 3 and King of Shaves nostrum does the deed for over a month per blade shaving every other day.
