Quick change tool post

I have a Fortis 12″ swing lathe . Can someone recommend a tool post for under £100 . Toolpost just now is held on by a large T bolt .

worth a look, bit more money than you want to spend….sometimes they come up used but anything decent is not CHEAP..

..you won't regret spending the money……….what ever you buy make sure you can get used tool holders that fit……some suppliers make them so that you can only buy from them……..they are not interchangeable…………someone else will advise if you need a T3 for your machine…..

My height of top slide to center of chuck is 19mm . This might seem a straight forward question to those in the know . What size of toolpost do i need , the palava over getting the right belt for the spindle was enough and i don't want to make the same mistake with this .

Swing over bed is …160mm or 6.3 inches in old money

Height from top of the big T slot that the tool post sits is 19mm .75 in old money….

Have you got access to a mill?

Why not roll your own? A few designs in the mag over the years…

Hi Sean,

Even if you don't have access to a milling machine, you should be able to make a simple toolpost like this. You will need a slot drill to mill a slot for the tool though.

Shaun, I would not spend money, at least not for now, wait a bit 'til you know want you need. No need for quick-change unless you are in production. Shim the cutter to center or just below, stick the shims to the tool.

Having to use shims is the main reason I want a adjustable toolpost. I’m sorted now .

Well…….. Tool post arrive on Thursday ….wow this thing has plenty of heft to it . Tool post is the piston type AXA 100 series . So i go to mount the thing to discover the T slot base plate is way too big both in girth and width (panic stations ) Oh well in for a penny and that …. out with the grinder (it's all i have at the moment )I can hear the gasps of horror….These ultra slim cutting discs are the best . I used my diamond honing plates to fine tune the final clearance and it worked a treat . The tool holders also need trimming off the bottom ,only about 2mm to enable me to use the HSS i have . Anyways I've ended up with a very good fit on the T slot base plate ,it slides back and forth real nice,did some fairly heavy cuts all seems fine .Also tried to do some parting off …effortless …CUFFED to pieces .
