      Hi,

I have a Pultra P-type lathe which I have bought to use with my clockmaking hobby.

I looks like the bronze bearings have spun round so the oil holes do not match the holes in the headstock casting.

Does anyone have any drawings of the headstock that would help me with dismantling this?

      Thanks

      Julia

Hi Julia, cannot help with drawing, but your bearings have not spun. When you apply oil, it runs around a channel machined on the inside of the headstock and is drawn onto the spindle by a felt wick from the bottom. If you can find a drawing of a 1750/17770 headstock, dismantling is very similar (apart from thrust bearing)

            Hi David,

Thanks for your response I hadn't thought of that. I have a feeling my wicks are long gone as oil seeps out fairly quickly.

I'll just have to bite the bullet and strip it down.

If you do a search on this site for a thread titled "Pultra headstock help" there is a line drawing of the Pultra headstock. If that's no good, let me know- I'm sure I have a copy of the manual somewhere.

                  Thanks Guys,

I had seen that thread, the drawing is from the 17/50 and 17/70 manual so a different model to mine. Its useful to see where the wick goes though.

There really doesn't seem to be much info about Pultra Lathes online. Not that popular with the YouTube generation I guess

Julia, the dismantling instructions of 17/50 and 17/70 models may help you, but the P type wick is simpler – it is just a short wick in the bearing leading down to a small cavity in the headstock casting, where a small block of felt will help oil retention. Your wicks may be ok, as the volume of retained oil is small.( the rest leaks out- it is not as sealed oil cavity.) Dismantling is fairly simple and obvious and would put your mind at ease.

                    Dave.

                      Thanks Dave,

That's made me worry a bit less

I have some felt sheet left over from another project so will try and replace it if its missing. Hopefully get to look at it this weekend.

Dave was spot-on with his description. Here is the oil-well :-

You can see the circular hole the felt should be in here, also note the notch which aligns the bearing.

Another view you can kind of see the pin that the bearing aligns with :-

Some of the spindle components – bits are missing from this photo :-

It might be worth documenting this exercise with a short write up for MEW?

Julia, why don't you try Bracehand? they supply manuals & parts for pultra lathes and smart & brown lathes,I found them most helpfull.

                              Hi AC,

I did contact Bracehand but they responded with a terse email about a manual for the 17/XX series lathes.

                              Thanks

                              Julia
