To their credit, some chuck makers mark the jaws to indicate how far they may safely be used when projecting from the body (by "safely" I mean without undue risk of tooth breakage).

Hi, I agree with ega's words of wisdom, which is how I uderstood the marks and I have a 100mm 3 jaw with such marks, which will allow 100mm diameter max solid bar to be held with the outside jaws or a 100mm inside diameter max, piece of tube with the inside jaws. My 80mm on my mini lathe however, will only allow 70mm with the above stated limits, although a near to chuck diameter could be done with only the lightest holding pressure, as the No. 3 jaw will be on its last tooth. Hope this helps.

        Regards Nick.

P.S. the other limiting factor to consider, is the amount the jaws sticking out of the chuck, don't catch any part of the saddle in such occasions that the saddle passes under the chuck during the work progress.

… and it's perhaps worth noting that the 6" PBA chuck that I linked earlier only claims a maximum capacity of 5"

Bison give quite a good idea of what the chucks will hold, see the second page of this PDF

Still does not show them being used like this though where you could hold work upto the max swing of your lathe.

The C3 mini lathe manual quotes a 180 mm maximum swing over the bed. The maximum DIAMETER over the Cross Slide is likely to be 100 mm, from memory.

With regard to the maximum size that can be held by a chuck will depend on whether bar or hollow.

100mm bar over the Cross Slide, but a ring upto 180 mm external diameter could be held by chuck jaws gripping the internal diameter, as long as it does not try to pass above the Cross Slide.

Personally, I am not a fan of Machine Mart. The local branch lost my confidence years ago. If I were buying a new lathe, I would rather deal with one of the Model Engineering suppliers.

Having had no experience of Axminster or or Amadeal, cannot comment. But ranked by my experience of other suppliers, my preference would be Arc Euro, Warco and then Chester. But these are purely my preferences, others may have had different experiences.
