Have you looked at the brilliant lathes.co.uk site? Lots of info there and it would seem that a screwcutting chart is available from him.

There's a fair amount of information on the Lathes & Co website – go to http://www.lathes.co.uk/perfecto/index.html

I had one of these bought from new in the early 1970s. It was OK as long as you didn't expect too much of it, but it soon let you know you were over-working it by starting a dreadful chatter which led to poor surface finish. Mine was imperial – I don't think there was a metric version. I replaced it with a Myford ML7R, which was far superior.

Hope I haven't put you off. You will get some good work out of your Perfecto is you treat it kindly!

Hi Phil, I started with a Zyto (very similar) many years ago (now have Warco WM250) . That little lathe will get you going nicely. You may want to beef up the benchtop a bit though (looks like 1/2" ply) you will find it resonates and leads to chatter. A length of kitchen worktop placed on top of the ply would be good, and easy to clean down too.

                      Cheers, happy turning

                      John

                      Edit: spelling

Cheers john I have now added another sheet of 3/4 ply on top of this so around 1 1/4 thick now yes its a super little lathe its my first one its very quiet to just ordered some new cutters as the ones that came with it were all damaged it will do to get me started and only making small things at the moment so should be ok for that

The pictures in Phil's posts show a machine exactly the same as mine. One quirk was that the carriage handwheel worked in the opposite direction to that on any other machine I have ever used – you turned it clockwise to advance the carriage the left. I think what really limited the machine's performance was a rather weak headstock bearing. I note that the very last Perfecto machines had a roller bearing headstock, which must have been a great improvement.

Mike- my Corbett lathe has the same set up turn clockwise to advance saddle towards the chuck, its never been an inconvenience for me

Where there is "1" it is just to make the spreadsheet calculations work (in the part of the sheet not shown here) so just leave out or use idler gears to bridge the gap. You do not have to follow a chart slavishly it is just one way of getting the ratio needed. So if it shows 20 driving 40 you could use 30>60 or 25>50 if those are what you have.

I had the perfecto lathe in the 1970 I completed several small stationary engines on it the only problem I had was getting the cutting tool to the correct height until I altered a myford multi tool holder to fit , You will enjoy it as it a good starting point

Saves an idler gear and stub shaft in the saddle, so it's cheaper.
