parting blades part 2

I have an AXA tool post with the parting tool holder (cdcotools.com part no 12004 sorry the link wouldn't cut and paste for me).

I use his blades too- or at least the ones he supplied a couple of years ago.

The blade has an angled top surface as well as side clearance and is jolly hard to set in the holder – which has a vertical side face. The blade wants to tilt over so that the side clearance on the tailstock side is obliterated.

I currently use a little bitty bit of wire next to the blade to hold it vertical (ie equal side clearance) but it is a nasty fiddle.

I know that I'm not robinson crusoe – what is the best solution?

Russell, I wonder if you could drill and tap for a couple of grub screws in about the area that the bit of wire gets put. these would be an adjustable alterative. Ian S C

Unfort, the holder is quite hard- it laughs when I try to scratch it with a scriber.

How about bonding the wire or a strip of shim steel in place with araldite.

It does look like that Toolpost is intended for parallel blades, but: The wire sounds a reasonable work-around if you are using blades with side clearance.

… You could probably bond the wire into the AXA Toolpost, with cyanoacrylate "SuperGlue".

If it's that hard (thought it might be)you could try bedding the parting tool against some JB weld, or similar, put some oil on the tool so that it does not get stuck. Ian S C

I had a similar problem a few years ago and simply epoxed a thin strip of brass shim onto the holder near the bottom edge. Never came off and holds the blade with clearance both sides.
