Failing all else, was it Mikron that used to polish the cast iron parts of their (expensive) lathes and just leave it at that?

And the finish was always admired.

As said previously cast iron is funny stuff. I know in some industry they leave it outside to the elements for fair periods of time. To season it. They always used to say Detroit iron was the best in the states because of the time it lived outside.

Simply put, to escape being told by Brussels what to do and to avoid a United States of Europe.

Absolutely, how dare the EU strive to improve the British standard of living? Brussels working to defuse the trade conflicts that led to two World Wars? Nanny State gone mad…

No need for debate on the forum because the decision has been made. However, I recommend everyone to write a list of what they expect leaving the EU to deliver, both good and bad. Then review the list every year from now on to see how much of what you personally expected actually comes to pass. Or not.

Glorious dawn or jumping into the abyss, no one knows. Nothing has happened yet because the negotiations are still ongoing. Meanwhile, Coronavirus might change everything. Due to Covid-19 the UK economy is expected to shrink by 6 or 7% this year while the total cost of the lock-down etc. is rising towards £350Bn. Far more expensive than the mere £15Bn it cost to belong to the EU! As the rest of the world is also in financial difficulty, it's not clear if new trade deals will be aided or hindered. Brexit remains a gamble. We live in interesting times…

Yeah, but what qualifications do they think they have to do any of that?

Just like with any other vote, there was a chance of things being upended and that's exactly what happened.

            Brexit first, quitaly next! devil

Seasoning Cast Iron is done to make the finished article more stable. I've even heard of it being buried to season it.

Point taken, but what's causing Hollowpoint's problem then?

No idea, but I doubt it's due to the cast iron. I wouldn't have said that cast iron had a super smooth surface when painted. I wouldn't think it's due to the graphite either. Graphite is a lubricant because the structure consists of layers of atoms arranged in a hexagonal pattern. Each layer is strong in X & Y but the layers can slip over each other fairly easily. There's nothing to say that the paint can't stick to a layer.

As for iron castings being stress relieved outside I'm afraid that's something of a myth. In the US the NRL (Naval Research Laboratory) did some tests that indicated that stress relief due to small temperature changes and corrosion over months or years were small compared to short higher temperature cycles.
