New V belt for milling machine has just arrived. For once, I treated myself to a genuine Fenner, rather than the usual cheapies.

It has come with a very oily/greasy surface , which I haven't encountered before when buying a new belt, and it looks to me like it will slip like *******.

Should I clean it off, and if so with what? Or rub it with emery cloth? Or will it be ok.

Don’t know, but I do know that some belts are advertised as coming with a thin surface coating.

Ask Fenner? Likely the best, easiest and quickest way to sort it out.

Thanks, have just emailed them, but I can't see a multinational bothering to reply to a private individual who has bought a £5 item through a 3rd party.

Is it perhaps belt dressing as opposed to oil or grease ie might it be positively beneficial?

I think it may be mold release agent.

Whatever it is, a little use will probably remove it anyway!
