      Hi

I am about to put a Newall DRO on my myford super7. I got the kit from Newall for the Myford, I get the feeling that the sadle lock is going to be in the way and feel that its probably best putting the lock at the front of the saddle. Can anyone point me in the direction of what's going to be involved into doing this before I start dismantling ??? or any information articles on moving the lock .

      Thanks Bob

          Bob,

PM me with your email address and I will send you photos of how I moved the carriage lock onto the front, much more useful and more to hand (as well as leaving the back clear for yourI Newall system. I can show you tidy installation shots of the Newall System (I have 4 on different machines)

            Hi Bob,

I too have the saddle lock on the front of the apron. I used the idea in MEW May 2010,  no 163 in the archives.

The lock uses the thread dial mounting and works very well indeed.

More photos in my album under 'Super 7 saddle lock'.

            Rgds,

            John

This is where Myford put the saddle lock when they installed a Newall DRO…

Bob – as far as I can tell using a torch and mirror, it's the same arrangement as was on the back of the saddle of my previous ML7. That is, a thick disc of mild steel overlapping the underside of the shear with an off set tapped hole for the bolt. Presumably it sits in a counterbored hole to suit.

I moved my rear-mounted saddle lock no problem about half an inch to the right IIRC to clear the Newall DRO on my S7. I made up a little jig to ensure that the drilled hole went through vertically and in the same position relative to the bed. I have a Kipp handle there as a tool-free lock (rather than the hex head Myford supply.) Somebody advertises them on eBay. Occasionally it does foul the tailstock, but it's not too difficult to rremove it temporarily.

The front-mounted lock does have its attraction, but I don't think the Kipp type handle would fit without fouling things so you'd need the spanner to hand or the low-height lock as in the photo above..

For those who own the more popular far eastern machines and come across the same problem, here is my way for fixing the problem.
