I fear that until somebody finds some real horse in the horse power rated motors nothing will change.

      Bob P..

Not going to happen, they are all in the pies.

On the TV news tonight was a bit about Bil Buckly who in his Auckland factory, manufactures about 85% of the magnetic equipment used by the worlds computor, and electronics manufactures. Just bought a couple of dozen magnets from there, they arrived this afternoon. You will find that most of the crystals controlling electronic equipment are made in NZ. Some of our large manufacturers have gone overseas. Whispertech has gone to Spain to be nearer its market in Europe, but R&D remains in Christchurch NZ. Ian S C

          Firstly Dianne well said
Most of my kit apart from a few old calipers and vices are from the far east, Wanted many years ago to purchase a Myford and asked them on several occasions could I have some brochures, narry an answer was the loud reply, Went to a show where they were I will never forget a large chap with red braces, tried to get his attention but he was to intent in chatting to his mates..SAD why did they go bust. Warco was at the same show, Guess what, David Warren was extremely helpful Also purchased a Chester 626 Mill
OK the manuals are rubish but they can be obtained from other sources free.
Am now on my 4th Loco they range from 3.5g to 7.25g.
I have been to the far east many times now and have great respect for there industriosness. I think that politicians over the years in this country, no matter what colour of badge they represent have been shooting themselves in the foot and selling our industrial base down the pan.

I bought both a lathe & a mill from Warco at last years Harrogate exhib', both are performing more than adequately for my needs so far! there are a few tweaks that I do as I am going along to improve capability & performance in general terms but basically am using them 'straight out of the box'. you must remember that you gets what you pays for, don't expect a 'Rolls for a Mini price'. all the dealers at H'gate (Warco,Chester,Amadeal, Arc Euro etc, usual disclaimer) were selling Chinese machines & equipment ,with very few, if any, Brit bits. I too was on the lookout for a Myford Super 7B but there were only 2 for sale, & second hand at that! ..& priced at stupid money! so I ended up with both machines plus stands for less than the price of one of the Myfords

If you are set on looking & getting 'British then I suggest you look in the MEW mag, go to the last two pages & browse the 'Home & workshop' machinery section (Usual disclaimer other than interested browser) where you'll find 'Brit 'stuff, Myfords,Harrison, Denford, Boxford etc, with a selection of Myfords S7B's..starting around £3000, again overpriced.

As with other members comments, you can't blame the Chinese for filling a niche market when our successive governments have failed to invest & maintain in Britiish manufacturing base & prefer to go chasing the almighty dollar & larger & larger profit margins for shareholders tied in with, as a once female Prime Minister instigated & stated, 'the need for privatisation & open market competitiveness', hence bringing about the decline & in many cases the cessation of our manufacturing base, & sell off of all our utilities, nationalised industries(for all their shortfalls) car manufacturers, steel industry etc, etc, what hasn't been swallowed by the Chinese has/is being swallowed by Asia, go try looking for something labelled 'Made in England' you might be lucky & get a Morgan +2.. if you have the dosh! even Roll Royce are no longer 'British' so I think you should reconsider making comments on burgeoning economies that are seizing the opportunities that 'British investment ' has / is failing to do..all in the name of 'profit!!' or a 'quick buck'

                  Cheers, Have a nice day!

                  George.

In brief defence of Home And Workshop Machinery, as a dealer, they’re obliged to supply goods that are fit for purpose (because model engineers are fussy buggers) so rarely does a machine not have some maintenance and replacement parts added. They are also turning stock over so their prices make sense from a business point of view. Cheap Chinese imports have simply lowered people’s expectation of prices. And following on from a point made earlier, the branded product coming out of China is generally good because the brand owners own the factory and have personal control over quality. Most Chinese machinery importers simply buy in what’s offered and just add their bit on top. I know Arc try to raise the bar and possibly some of the others but the importers generally don’t have a manufacturing background. People like Sony do. All they’ve done is move the factory.
