          Hi Daryl

They look like crimpers for closing up hollow metal ferrules around wires. Similar items were used by telecoms engineers.

Two wires are threaded through the tube, which is placed in the tool that is then tightened up and squeezes the tube firmly onto the wires.

              Hi Neil

Sounds good . The one on the left is marked Barnes patent 11861 SEPT 2 1884. The second

from left is marked King Dick with a panther head logo, Other two SJS owners initials i suspect .

I got nowhere with the BARNES PATENT.

              Thanks Daryl.

I'v found the answer, not too sure about the one on the left, but the King Dick, and others are Spoke grippers, for holding bike spokes while adjusting them with a nipple key. Ian S C

Hi Ian . I am feeling very comfortable with your explanation. I actually have five of these, the other

is an identical King Dick which I keep in a modelling tool box and whether by accident or design I use

to hold pieces of cycle spokes whilst threading to use as servo rods.

                      thanks Daryl.

I spotted it when looking through King Dick cycle tools on google pictures, but I couldn't find a web site that I could post here, but I didn,t have to hunt too hard, but I find that it depends on exactly how you word your question as to whether you find what you are looking for, then a day or so later you go back, and its gone. The clamp on the left appears tobe able to hold two spokes, but the chisel mark in the middle must mean something, not sure how it would work, but might it be something to do with joining belts, I'm thinking of a couple of old Barns lathes, origionally foot powered through a round leather belt, must have a look. There seems a good chance that this is the Barnes in question

Neil, at least the way images is setup on this computor, you don't get what i got on the old one, on that one if you put in King Dick it would be mostly on a subject far removed from bicycle tools.

King Dick Spoke Grippers: Most useful for tightening up spokes in pram wheels, bath chair wheelsetc. Also useful when fitting wired-on pram tyring. Price 1/3 each, 13/- per dozen.

The logo on the King Dick tools is a dogs head. Ian S C

As a teenegar there was much smutty smirking inspired by my dad's collection of King Dick spanners.

They were very much a premium brand; I think I have one or two,
