Myford lever collet chuck

Are the collets for the Myford quick acting, lever chuck a Myford special? or do other collets fit?

If I remember correctly, the lever collet chuck uses standard Hardinge MA99E collets.

Unlike the spindle nose collet closer device, which uses special Myford MT2 collets.

If you are looking for MA99Es, I think I've got 3 somewhere, from when I had a lever collet chuck.

Does any one know where the specifications can be found for the Myford MA99E collets ?

I have a few collets, and want to make some special sized ones. I have some existing 1/4 inch and 16mm, but am wanting a 3/4 inch step collet and a 3/4 inch through collet.

I stand to be corrected, but: I have been led to believe that they are identical to Hardinge MA99E collets.

… You might get better results looking for Hardinge dimensions.

The Hardinge website does not even mention MA99E collets. Google only comes back to this page because of the mention of MA99E collets. Nowhere have I been able to see a drawing or any reference information on either the collets or collet holder. I am sure that the taper is 15 deg per side and that the register diameter is Ø23.98 mm from measuring the sample I have. It looks like the front nose is a nominal Ø22.0 with a 5 mm spigot length. The outer diameter of the collet taper looks to be about Ø29.0mm if projected to a sharp point. From the collet front shoulder to the back of the collet looks to be a neat 54.0 mm long and 59.0mm long over all. While what I have measured will make for me a working collet, it would be nice to know what the real spec actually is.

You might find ebay item 351916003716 more convincing … but of course the Hardinge box might be just a decoy.

Michael, those are also things that came up, but no specs given to the collets actual outer conforming dimensions.There is no shortage of people selling , and most is available, except for the sizes I want. They don't make an emergency collet either in the MA99E. Emergency collets are all made, ie slitted,and have 3 or 4 pin holes , where dowels are fitted, and then the collet bored or cut to the required shape etc.

In the rcgroups thread that Michael linked to there is a comment that these collets are the same as those used on the older (10" grinding wheel size) myford grinders. I do not know if that is true. However those collets are available here:

They are however referenced as type "G2459P". NB the later Myford grinders use Hardinge 4C collets which are not the same.

 

EDIT: Just seen that the G2459P collets look nothing like the MA99E. It would seem the rcgroups thread has inaccurate information! What a shock for the internet.

I only checked for my own satisfaction, and for the benefit of those that might happen-upon this thread in some future search.

You had cast doubt upon my suggestion that Hardinge MA99E collets even existed [never mind them being interchangeable with Myford].

I am aware that I did not give you dimensions; but I did try to point you in a suitable direction for further investigation.

Michael, clearly you totally miss understood my initial post. I know they exist, I have a few. I am after the data sheet for the collet specifications, just like you can get the specs on ER32 collets etc etc. But that same data seems to be eluding me and all the searches come up zero. I don't want someone else to make my collets, I want to make some very specific collets. I just want the specification for the the original collet design. So far non of your links etc have shown any specifications for the MA99E collets.

Hardinge don't have MM99E listed, but that may be because it's another collet type, re-identified by Myford to disguise the true identity, or may have been a special.

As you have some idea of the dimensions, you may be able to identify the true collet, if one exists.

The closest I could find was scarce info on the Brown &Sharp #10 collets, but they are not the same as the MA99E collets. I have asked Myford so we will see.

I am pretty sure that the Hardinge Collets MA99E are well and truly obsolete, so don't expect them in the Hardinge offerings, if indeed Hardinge are still in toolmaking, in these Asian dominated times!

Got it sorted. I made up come collet blanks and made some step collets that I needed.

I made the rear bearing diameter 23.98mm, nice slide fit into the collet closer. The body of the collet, I made parallel and put a Ø0.3 mm relief 10mm up from the bottom for 8 mm long. This is where I drilled 4 holes for the slots to run into. I also put a small relief at the bottom of the 15 deg taper where it meets the body diameter .I used a 0.2mm radius tool for the finish turning of the parts, and made the relief to Ø23.5 mm .The front taper I made 15 deg per side. The intersect diameter of the 15 deg taper to the front shoulder I made it 29.0 mm and then turned it parallel to Ø28.3mm .The front spigot I made that Ø22.0 X4.0 mm long. I wanted the front of the collet very close to the retention nut. The standard ones look to be 5mm long on the spigot .After splitting the collets, just made a shallow tapered mandrel to stretch the collet open. I made them from 4340 steel and left them in the supplied condition of about 30Rc. 70 ton steel. PS If the collets are not spread they do not release forward. Also the spread only need to be just enough to allow the retention nut to hold the collet when being placed into and out of the collet chuck.
