      Hi All.
Can't get my head around this one, and yes it is rather early for a Sunday.

I need to make a Vacuum brake valve (well actually it's for my Steam operated drain cocks)…

Bit of .750" bar. Cut radial slots into the end. Perfic for the dividing head me thinks. Bar in the Dividing head, .062" cutter in the lathe chuck

Vertical slide is mounted on the rear Cross slide T Slot, square to the cross slide.
Dividing head is bolted to the vertical slide.

How do you get the spindles to line up ?

I would mount a TDI on either spindle and set it on the other spindle then rotate it and adjust both the cross and vertical slides until the TDI reads zero around the diameter.

You are missing the point Martin…

The Cross slide is already at maximum.

The Centers are in so I can use a bit of sheet between the points to line em up with eachother.

It is a English designed machine so you can expect this but what you need is a long crosslide. Niko.

                  Alex Collins:

I sympathise with your dilemma. I felt that the forward travel on my vintage S7 was too short and years ago fitted a spacer between the leadscrew bracket and the front end of the cross slide.

I could post a photo if it would help.

                    Alex,

ega is correct about the short cross slide.

I notice that you are using a swivel type vertical slide. It may be little consolation to you but the fixed vertical slide would be more suitable as the fixing holes are rather closer to the front face than those on the swivel type. This would probably be enough to get your spindle to align.

Perhaps you could borrow one of these from a fellow model engineer?

                      Problem solved.

2 Spacers between the Cross slide and lead screw bracket.

                      Thanks for your comments.

I will look into the Long Cross slide idea but at £200 odd I may stick with the spacers.

Glad you solved your problem. This photo shows the spacer I mentioned. It gives an extra 1" forward travel away from the operator and, of course, the same amount less in the other direction, which I have never found to be a problem.
