Myford 254 DRO

hi, I am in the process of fitting a DRO to Myford 254 lathe. The Crosslide in so not simple.

The DRO slide and reading head need to be on the Tailstock side of the Crosslide.

Problem, there are 6 Gib wear adjusting screws and the Topslide Locking Screw right in the way.

I could be overcome it by covering the adjuster screws with the slide and also fitting the slide a few inches back from the front of the crosslide.

I am just wondering if any other members have experienced this and if so, how you overcame the problem.

Simple, use a Newall Microsyn scale and head, the scale is only 6mm diameter and you can see under it and get to all the screws!

I drilled a 4mm hole in my cross slide, tapped for 5mm

Fitted a protuding bar from the back of the saddle

mounted the caliper on bits of 5mm stud

 

Has been extremely accurate and reliable

 

 

The really important bit is mounting it absolutely straight, this gives a very steady reading

If it's not completely straight it suffers from "sticky" bits where the reading jumps

 

Well worth the effort though, a great mod
