      Hi all,

Rather than go to the hassle of setting up my top slide to a known MT2 to make an external MT2 using nice free cutting mild steel, I have obtained a supposedly soft blank MT2 arbor, because it might be quicker, easier and certainly more accurate.

The problem is I need to machine down the "tail" of the external blank MT arbor and internal screw cut (1/2 inch x 32tpi) for a different draw bar thread. – well this is not really the problem, the problem is that the steel at this end of the arbor is tough – really tough….it is not easy to machine – actually almost impossible….HSS tools and drills struggle

There are lots of suppliers who advertise MT blank arbors. So are there any genuine "soft" MT2 arbors that are soft throughout or are they only "soft" enough to machine at the large business end of the arbor?

      Regards to all

      Derek

Look on the Myford site here **LINK**

I used one recently to make an arbor for a milling cutter

Make another drawbar to match is an alternative if nothing other is possible.

The Blank Arbors that I got had M12 threads, so was able to make up a screw in adaptor to convert to 3/8 BSW, so did not need to machine the small end.

Probably only soft at the front end, with the part liable to wear being hardened, if only slightly. Any chance that you open up to tapping size with carbide tipped small boring bar?

+1 for making a threaded adaptor or new draw bar. I made threaded sleeves for my 30 int tooling so that I only have one draw var to worry about.

Agreed George there are many competitively priced units, it depends o what you are making of course but I find that many of them are too short to be of use hence my choice of the longer one at 2.0" , really a cannot see why suppliers don't have them longer the cost would be [should be !] negligible and "putting on tools" are rarer than hens teeth !

The morse taper blanks that I have had occasion to modify have been just surface hardened…probably nitrided. So a bit of a grind on the end to take off a millimeter or so, and then you are into material that you can drill and tap. This may not apply to all makes but it is worth a try, I have done it to more than one.

Had a bad time yesterday. It took me four tries to make another M12 – 3/8 BSW adaptor, before I succeeded (the M12 kept shearing off before I reached full depth Probably because I was using commercial studding )

The successful ones have all been made from High tensile bolts /studs. Must be a moral there!
