Hello all.

Could I please ask about the mags dimensional working systems ie metric or imperial. My shop is (going to be) metric. I accept that old reprints from the mag are going to be in imperial and if something really takes my fancy, then I will have to convert.

I looked at some recent back issues and the discussions and dimensions generally appear to be in imperial. Is there some sort of alternative metric plans service or am I just misunderstanding how this all works.

Michael, does it really matter which measurement system is used ? It is a simple job to convert the sizes, I have been doing it in industry for over 50 years. With just a little more thought perhaps going into the fastenings to get the head sizes to look in scale. My machinery is metric and I have both metric and imperial measuring tools but usually favour imperial measuring equipment.

The two Editors don't set any specific requirements as to what system is used for articles so it is very much down to the preference of the individual authors.

I would say most Loco and Traction engine designs tend to be in imperial, stationary steem and tooling a 50/50 mix and metric tends to be more common on IC engines. Though having said that iof the article comes from the US it will be imperial. There is no alternative metric service.

Michael, as most models are of railway/ traction or stationary engines from long ago, it is just easier to work in Imperial.

If freelance or new equipment designs then metric may be appropriate but as someone said earlier, it is very easy to convert from one to the other and, if you are making something 1" inch long or 25,4 then it doesn't matter as long as you can measure it.

I have no idea why as I was taught metric at school but for some reason I am far more comfortable working in imperial.

Having said that the build of a hit and miss engine I am presently working on is in metric. This is strange as the original engine is of American origin. ………. Presumably the drawings ain't.!

If you have an Apple or Android based phone there are some really good engineering apps for them for different needs.
