Model cleaning

hi all I need some advice I'm about to paint my traction engine what chemical cleaner is recommended to clean the engine without leaving any residue as some of the paint has to go on clean metal I'm worried that some cleaners may leave a film many thanks

Your local automotive paint shop should sell you pre paint wipe. A litre can will cost under a fiver. It is the thing car sprayers use prior to applying paint. Use an old 'T'shirt that has been well washed to wipe over the surface. Do not be tempted by 'J' cloths or similar, what ever you use must be lint free. When painting wear a disposable paper suit you will be amazed at he amount of dust you expel, and wear the hood up. I have used both when painting models and they work for me.

I use scouring powder commonly known as Vim, it cleans the metal and abrades the surface to key the paint in one go, use an old tooth brush to get into fine detail, works every time.

Many thanks for all your help I visited a auto supply company and come away with a tack cloth
