ML7 clutch repair/overhaul

After some 20 + years of use the clutch on my ML7 has 'given up'. I seem to remember that this has been covered in previous threads but can't locate it. I have the handbook with exploded diagram but memory says that there was a strong caveat about the internal spring when dismantling. Does anyone have experience of the process and/or advice before I venture into the innards?

Do you mean ML7 or Super 7? The two clutches are very different!

The ML7 clutch should respond to treatment without any nasty surprises (though you maybe need to be careful not to lose the two small bits of red fibre that ride in the brass spool on the right-hand end of the push-rod! )

Swarf, Mostly – thank you for the reply. It's the ML7 – Tri-Leva version … which is handy, as I can use the speed change levers as temporary clutches!

Haven't seen instructions, but the owners manual does show an exploded diagram. I think it's mostly a case of carefully take it apart.

I believe that the shoes are from a Raleigh Runabout moped, but I don't know if they are front or rear ones. I believe they are still available from a firm that makes spares for the mopeds. Google for 'Raleigh runabout brake shoes' should find them.

It's possible that the adjusting screw in the operating arm on the left side just needs a tweak. That's easy to experiment with!

Many thanks, Mark. The Raleigh Runabout tip could be very useful – still available on Ebay. Haven't tried the adjuster screw yet but will tomorrow. Fingers crossed!!

Just an update. Mark's tip was very timely – don't know quite what adjustment I made on the lever arm screw(but it was fairly minor) and all now appears to be working. A little tip for anyone else having to do this – the small operating rod from the centre to the swing arm is not attached at either end!! Obviously, the workshop gremlins have a Bank Holiday today, as when I discovered this, it didn't drop out and roll away into the swarf but jammed more or less in position! Much 'Happy Bear-ness' in the CJ shed!!
