      Good afternoon,

Has anyone fitted a Myford type tilt & swivel milling slide to a Warco WM240 lathe? It looks do-able, by modifying Warco's cross slide base plate.

          I've done it to a WM250V.

Yes, you need Warco's base plate unless you want to replicate it yourself, and tap 2 holes for studs for the swivel base. You could add tenons underneath to locate in the crossslide T-slots, but there's no real need – all I do to 'tram' it is to open the chuck far enough so the front face of the chuck jaws can be put into contact with the vice top face, then tighten down the the T-nuts. That lines up the slide square to the spindle within about a thou.

The vice and part of the vertical slide can get in the way of using the short leg of a hex key to tighten the 2 left-hand socket screws for the T-nuts, so I use the long leg of a ball-end Allen key with an extension piece on the short leg to give leverage.

I use it a lot – it's mounted maybe 40% of the time. You can get away with some baaad things – see above, where I'm boring the radius of a reinforcement piece for a Hypocycloidal ring-rack…

            Thank you Mick,

The WM240 & WM250V use the same base plate. Just got to source the slide now. I was hoping to get it along with the lathe, but Warco are out of stock.

Just remembered that there are a couple of location dowels protruding down from the Myford slide swivel base to fit the Myford crossslide slots – you'll need to drill the Warco baseplate for these too. I guess you could simply pull 'em out, but I dunno if that'd risk the swivel base itself turning under load. And you gotta be reasonable with load anyway.

There seem to be several on the Bay now for around 100. There's one with only a single big stud to clamp each pivot – I think I'd avoid that one and go for the ones with twin studs.
