      Hi All,

I was under the impression that the start/end of each Vol. coincided with the calendar year ends. On checking 2022 s vol. is in order before putting it on my library shelf, I noticed something that seems rather odd. The vol. starts with the mag dated 15-31 Dec. 2021. Cock- up?or what? Cannot recall seeing that before with previous Vols.. Yeah, OK so it's taken me long enough to spot it but I dont usually look at Vol. nos. until near the year end and start putting them in issue no. order ready to put in store.

I'm fairly sure I've seen similar date underlap / overlap at year end. Unusual for it to be dead on like that.

Probably there is an effort to keep the number of magazines in each volume the same which I think would cause this.

Several years ago I ran out of shelf space for binders and junked the wire hung system on A4 size magazines for transparent pockets to double the capacity of each binder. I bent up shallow U sections to bolt into the binder spine and screwed in three tubes between the U arms to hold 30 pockets giving room for indexes and a spare or two should one tear out.

Refilling en-mass I noticed several date oddities at year beginning and end.

Shelf space is getting tight again!

Hi John, you get two volumes each year consisting of 13 issues for each volume. The two volumes for 2022 are vol. 228 issue 4680, which started on December 17-30 2021 and finished on 16 June 2022 with issue 4692. Vol. 229 then started on June 17 2022, issue 4693 and finished with issue 4705, 2-15 December 2022. Vol. 230 issue 4706 started on 16-29 December 2022

            Regards Nick.

              Hi Clive,

Thank you for your comments which I found interesting. I started with the Easibinders years ago, for a short while but now stack loose Vols. in flat piles on shelves. A benefit to loosies is that they lay flat on the copier, for especially interesting articles to keep in a separate binder as a reference work.

              Hi Nick,

Thank you for your reply. That's exactly my point, the start and finish dates don't correspond with the calendar. Wonder why/how? The Calendar is a mess with all the odd days to different months and usually a spare 5 days per year, but the magazine are a regular 2 per month which should ignore dodgy calendars. I will check soon and make a thorough search around the house for the odd missing copies. It's got worse recently so now having a purge. Some mags, books as well, will be saved but others will be going. I have, for example, two complete sets of Don Young s "Locos. Large n Small" one nicely bound, the other, loose.

ME volumes are an interesting study.

Originally the magazine was weekly with 26 copies per volume.

Post ww2 it went to two weekly and 13 issues per volume.

In the early sixties things got complicated as when the magazine was sold by Percival Marshalls there was a slightly extended volume followed by a shorter one.

The final change was to two copies per month as the magazine was published on a Thursday so some months had three issues and some two before that.

The final problem is that some years had an extra Christmas issue over and on top of the 13 or 26 issues per volume

Hi John, how/why is that it's the calendar that upsets the apple cart, we get 26 issues that are available once a fortnight, which amounts to 364 days, pushing one day over the next three years and two days every forth year into the next 26 issues, and so the first issue for the following year starts earlier each year and two days on the forth year. The last volume that the first issue of a new volume starting at the closest date to the beginning of the new year was vol. 208 – issue 4420, 30th December 2011 – 12 January 2012.

                  Regards Nick.
