I have a Myford ml6 capstan lathe i want to make more turrets for.

pretty sure i'm thinking straight on it, but want to check.

once i have them made and fitting properly, i assume best way to get tool holder holes to line properly is to

1 fit it and using centre drill in collet mark hole positions.

2 drill out whilst still fitted using drill in collet.

brain says yes but also says sounds to simple must be missing something?

          Hi Naughtyboy,

That's how I did mine on a tailstock turret but I drilled undersize and finished to size with a reamer.

Presumably you'd recommend the same process for the similar turret that fits to the cross-slide of an ML7 or S7. Another question. if one has been fitted to another machine previously is any slight discrepancy in the centre heights something to be concerned about?

                Hi Brian

To save remachining the tool bores you may find that using steel shim to bring the turret tooling to centre height is an option, when you arrive at the exact thickness required use Loctite or similar to permanently secure the shimstock to the underside of the turret. It is important for drills, taps and reamers to be on centre height, some other tooling may be used off centre.

From memory the tool holes are 5/8" and when I used the same device for small drills, taps and reamers I would drill/ream a suitable size hole into a blank toolholder and the securing screw would bear on a flat machined into the blank before loading, this ensured accuracy of the tool when refitted to the turret again, for the most used tools these would be loctited into the dedicated holders.
