Does anyone know of a source for 2 1/2" Gauge 0-4-4T Tank Loco drawings? I have some 5'9" scaled wheels but mostly looking for frame and especially boiler design drawings.

Nothing comes to mind off hand Joseph. It is more common in Gauge 3 (and 2.5" gauge passenger hauling) to build 4-4-0 (Martin Evans 'Eagle' for instance) or 4-4-2 (Atlantic) type tender engines. There are certainly 4-4-0 tank engines running at Gauge 3 GTGs – but I don't think they are to published designs (e.g. they've been custom built either by a professional builder or their ME owners). Have you decided how you want to run/use the engine (scenic or driver hauling etc) ? This may will help guide you towards how best to fire the engine and other design considerations. Regards, IanT

            Hi Joseph,

I thought I'd better check my statement above (before anyone else did) and sure enough – there is at least one 0-4-4 2.5" design published – and that's LBSC's SR 0-4-4T.

The drivers are 2.75" ( 70mm = 5' 2" at 13.5mm ) and its a slide valve with slip eccentric motion. Boiler is meths fired water tube. Published in English Machanics 30th June 1944. Photo copies of the construction notes were available from the 2.5" Association at one time and probably still are.

            Regards,

            Ian T

              Hi Ian

              Thanks for the replies,

This will be for free running, your mention of LBSC's design sounds like a great start. I don't mind meths fired, that will be a first for me. But I'll see if I can locate the article and any drawings then use that as the foundation for a Caledonian era McIntosh CR '439' class, namely the preserved CR 419.

              Regards

              Joe

                Hi Joe,

The 2½" Gauge Association indeed has copies of the original drawings for the Southern 0-4-4T and also a new set drawn with CAD that I produced some years back. We can also provide a reprint of the original articles. Unfortunately we can only sell the majority of our drawings and reprints to members of the Association due to an agreement with Model Engineer made many years ago.

I've got a set of the original castings for the 0-4-4T that I hope to complete one day!

                Regards,

                John
