        .

        It isn't 56, or 60 [as per Bazyle's comment] so it's off-topic.

Is the double dentent the same as a forked detent?

          Cheers Michael

Double detent used with a 45T gives 90 possible positions, 90 is divisible by 18 so on topicthumbs up

              For the sake of clarification:

              i.e … it's off Bazyle's topic.

[the thread had already drifted from the OP's question]

                Would this work?

                40 into 360 is 9 and 18 into 360 is 20, so a common denominator

cut first spline(1), move 9 teeth forward(10) cut second spline

move 9 teeth forward(19) cut third spline

move 9 teeth forward (28) cut fourth spline

                37-37 fifth spline 46-06 (46total,which is 06 on a 40 tooth gear)

                55-15 64-24 73-33 82-02 91-11 100-20 109-29 118-38 127-07 136-16 145-25 154-34

18 splines cut with a 40 tooth gear

                Magic!

                editrobably not…

Thanks for the ideas and it set me thinking and I realized I have a DRO's and a screen on the milling machine so making an index plate will be easy. Make the disc and then find the center and I can do any number of holes, simples.

Exactly! That's how I made this special dividing plate, 63 and 69 holes:

                    56 & 60 suggested recently don't actually solve the OP's original requirement for 18 smile p

That's because it was suggested in reply to the query by Clive, not the OP.

Neils double detente on page one looks useful.

It looks like you can do a direct division in one direction, rotate it 90 degrees and you can do a half division

I'd drill two sets of holes, one of 56 and one of 60.

Damn, now I will have to modify my Harold Hall dividing device with a pin/plunger and arm. That disc looks very good Andrew.

On Saturday I used some odd pieces of material to make up a small arm and mandrel to take an indexing plate from my rotary table. It's a bit crude but I have next to no stock and had to make do. It works ok and there is no backlash.

                              He wants 18 divisions 45 x2=90 so every 2 1/2 teeth.

A question here, if I were to drill index holes in the back plate of my lathe chuck what are the preferred number of holes for general engineering use?
