Ineos narrows options for new car plant

The location of a plant to build a new off-road vehicle has been narrowed to three options, according to Ineos.

Jim Ratcliffe, the founder of Ineos, plans to build a rugged off-road vehicle, which he believes will fill a gap in the market left when Land Rover stopped building its Defender in 2016.

A brand new plant might be built on the coast in the northeast of the UK.

But the project has also been offered mothballed plants and spare production capacity at existing plants in Europe.

The project is a major departure for Ineos, which owns 65 chemical plants around the world, the biggest in Grangemouth Scotland.

"Ideally we would like to build it in the UK, because certainly I have a bit of a passion for UK manufacturing," Mr Ratcliffe told the BBC's Today programme.

Bring it up here to North east Jim, we have a plot of land that used to be SSI ripe for development.

This is a really strange diversion for him. Might be a childhood ambition kinda thing

"In April 2010, Ratcliffe moved Ineos's head office from Hampshire to Rolle, Switzerland, decreasing the amount of tax the company paid by £100m a year."

              Hmm….

They don't do a lot of manufacturing in the head office. At least he will be paying tax somewhere, unlike certain internet giants I could mention, but might get sued if I did

Rather like that vain idiot Dyson claiming Brexit won't hurt UK manufacturing business. Which is a bit rich given that he moved all of the Dyson manufacturing to Malaysia starting in 2003. Obviously the cost of import duty into the EU is more than offset by the reduced cost of overseas production and the inflated pricing he has managed to establish.

Give him his due, he sells fairly mediocre and unreliable products at a premium price – but that makes him a marketing genius in my eyes, not an engineer. And not an expert in UK manufacturing.

As for the Ineos thing, it sounds as if the guy has been paying himself too much. Good to see it potentially being ploughed back into the UK local economy rather than going to the grave with him. Whether it ever pays back as a business may be another matter.

With the economic uncertainty at the moment I'd be surprised for anyone to establish a start-up here. I wouldn't.

as far as I can find out, Ineos is owned outright by one man. It is his company, so he can pay himself what he likes. Nothing to do with the likes of us. If it all goes pear shaped he loses, not us, and we don't have to bail him out. On the other hand, if you're a banker and it all goes pear shaped, the governmet bails out the bank and the CEO gets a huge payoff to get rid of him. This is our money, whether it be pension funds losing out on share price or taxpayer money direct.

I have to admit that I know nothing at all about Ineos as a company or Ratcliffe as a man . . . but the wikipedia entry is an interesting read !

The only way I can see this project working on any scale is if he mimmicks the Humvee / Hummer & utilises taxpayers money from the defence budget, together with 'regeneration' grants & subsidies & builds something that will sell to armies & stupid rich people.

In the coming years you will be hard pressed to sell this product to Joe Public.

He'd do well to have a sit down with John Bloor who resurrected Triumph Motorcycles & then buy Stuart Garner a drink . . . who REALLY knows how to use taxpayer money to turn smoke into a product !

The true Dyson story is a long & complicated one which very few people know all the true details of. Interconnected with allsorts of twists & turns with another fake businessman who goes by the name by of Alan Sugar.

Dyson tried for years to flog his cyclonic vacuum cleaner, success came only when Sir Stanley Kalms saw the opportunity to take another £billion or so out of our pockets.

Would you feel a little better were I to re-phrase the second sentence of my post as " I wouldn't were I contemplating such a venture"?

For completeness I suspect we have both done a similar number.

I've only watched him from the Grangemouth angle

He bought a defunct refinery, then brought a feisty jock workforce into line (no small feat in itself) and then set up an ethanol/plastics arm at Grangemouth, then built a proper fleet of ships to supply it with ethanol from the USA
