Help with Adept 2 shaper

Hi all,

I need a bit of help with an Adept no 2 shaper, can anyone who has access to one possibly measure the hole centres on the handle and on the swing link ? Having looked online it would appear that the ram stroke is either 6.250 (lathes.co.uk) or 6.500 (a period advert of the day) the stroke on mine is 5.375 and I wonder if at sometime a new handle or swing link has been made for the shaper or did some Adept no 2's come with 5.375 stroke.

Handle holes are 4 inches apart on the original handle

I'm afraid my machine is buried in the deepest corner behind an incredible amount of useful junk so I can't get at the little link bit on the machine

Cheers Ady1, just had a quick measure up and the hole centres on the handle are 3 1/8 and on the link arm 2 7/8 so the handle will need replacing at least .

Might not. Not seen an adept, but my Alexander had three holes in the handle. Might just need another hole drilling? You might need a much longer handle if you wish to maintain the same mechanical advantage?

I had the same thought Ndiy , I think I saw a picture of a Petite rapid lime hand shaper that had 3 holes in the handle I assume to alter the stroke so I may give that a try .

Paul, my Adept 2 seems different again in that it has two sets of holes:

small link arm, holes at 2.75" & 0.8",

Operating arm, holes at 4.425" and 3.5"

The first holes quoted are the ones in use and give a ram stroke of 6.25".

Obviously the second two would give a shorter stroke but not used or measured it.

From centre of pivot pin in small link arm to end of the operating arm is 19.75"

PS – just to clarify the 0.8" hole in the small link arm would give an effective link arm length of approx 2", down from approx 2.75" sounds obvious I know but could have been misconstrued!  All measurements are approx,, measured over the pins/bolts etc.

I'm pretty sure I put extra holes in my linkage to make life easier for certain jobs

You don't always need a full stroke, sometimes a shorter stroke with more torque is easier

Re drilled the handle tonight at 4 inch centres and the ram stroke is now 6 1/2 inch thanks everyone
