Help needed to find the correct inserts for a kennametal E12QNKLCR11 boring bar

Hi,

I picked up one of these:

Its a kennametal 12mm solid carbide boring bar with a retaining clip that holds the insert down, and now I need to get some inserts for it. I have to admit I am a little bit confused about determining what are the correct inserts.

The bar has from eye balling it a pocket for 55° insert shape, and if I fiddle about with the search criteria on the kennametal website I think that it is for N or K tips. After that I am lost. am looking for inserts for light cuts on the usual hobbyist range of ferrous and none ferrous materials.

Seems to require an "N/K parallelogram 55" insert. Never heard of them but they seem to be called KCGR110308 in ISO terminology. Sounds like a Kennametal special design, so you may find they cost a fair bit. There are a few on ebay but make sure you are sitting down before you take a look. Presumably Kennametal charge even more for them.

yep the kennametal website is not easy.

If I look at other bars often the appropriate inserts are listed not for this bar though… I got it in with a few other tools so its a bonus if I can get some inserts for it. I hope I can as it looks like it is a really nice tool, the solid carbide is surprisingly heavy and I am hoping rigid.

It would appear that what you have is an internal profiling tool as opposed to a straightforward boring bar. However that shouldn't stop you using it as a boring bar. I've had similar problems with obtaining tips for a Kennametal face mill and a Seaco face mill. I managed to get the Seaco tips on ebay but I picked up the Kennametal tips from JB Tools **LINK** at the Doncaster show. Worth a try!

Thanks Murray. You edited your post so my post is a little bit off topic.

Thanks to your information I have found some of these inserts closer to home and at a better price at a dealer I've used before. However these are a roughing grade I'll give them a go though as they are cheap. If they fit all right I might stump up for some of the finishing grade from ebay.

If it is carbide, the bar will be more rigid than "normal" due to its mass. They work a treat, certainly the diameter/length(depth) ratio can be increased.

Hi,

I now see that on the kennametal website under the "gage insert" column is written "KC..110308L" which of course means an "KC##" insert type.

KWIL, I will be hopefully boring some longish holes. length of ~7x diameter of the boring bar with this 12mm when I get tips for it. I have another kennametal 20mm diameter solid carbide profiling/boring bar and that came with some tips. I have bored up to a length of ~5x diameter with that without any measurable (by me) taper, and I expect it can go much deeper.
