I have recently acquired a 2 inch Durham & North Yorkshire traction engine that is about 80% finished…..I think!. I am 12 years old and with the help from my dad hopefully we can finish this project. However, there are many things for us to learn as we start this journey. I have a full set of plans and some useful book and even 12 Model Engineer magazines from 1979 where John Haining wrote an article each month on the build. I would very much like to know of members who have a Durham & NY engine and I would like to build up contacts for tips and workshop expertise. Looking forward to being part of the community.

Welcome to you and your Dad. If you have a model engineering club near you it is worth joining, there will be plenty of help and advice, and if you intend this to be a working model then certification of the boiler. If you don’t have any paperwork for the boiler then before you get to advanced it would be a good idea to present the boiler for it’s initial hydraulic test. Once this is done then you know the boiler is good and that your work will not be in vain. Where abouts are you ? in the |UK ? Best wishes and good luck. Noel.

            Hello Noel,

Thank you for your reply and advice. We do have a boiler certificate, out of date now of course, but will get the hydraulic test done early as advised. We will start looking for a club near us here in Poole, Dorset and hopefully find one not to far away. Best Regards. Jamie and Paul.

              Hello Bernard,

Thank you for your reply. I would very much like to liaise with you ref the build, without becoming a pest i hope! My line of work takes me away from home for 5 weeks at a time so can only get working on the engine whilst I am at home but being an engineer on board ship gives me access to workshop tools ( although maybe too large for model work ) so I am hoping to be able to do stuff whilst I am away. Would you prefer me to communicate through the forum or directly through e mail.
              Best Regards. Jamie and Paul.

Ahoy there shipmates. There are clubs at both Wimborne and Bournemouth. Since the engine has not I presume been steamed it would seem you already have the initial hydraulic test, this is very good. Join a club and speak to the boiler inspector,he will advise you as to how to proceed. I’m also connected with the sea, have been all my life, currently keeping 2 LARC XVs running, check it out. Noel.
