Harrison Milling Machine

Hi Guys .. I'm new on here but after looking through old posts it looks to be a great site. I have just bought a Harrison Milling machine that comes with horizontal & knuckle head but hasn't got the 'brake arm' on the side. It came from a school about 12 years ago and has never been powered up since. The school had painted it Black and looks messy so I'm going to strip the machine and give it a new coat of Harrison blue/grey paint. Do any of you guys on here have any manuals for a machine like this ? also the power feed gears fitted are 43/38 … any ideas where I can get the rest to complete the full set ? Regards Mark

Hi Mark, I also have a Harrison H mill with the Harrison vertical head. You can get lots of info, and the manual from http://www.lathes.co.uk . There is also a couple of milling machine books available, one which used to be a companion to the Harrison Mill, the title escapes me but I am sure someone will come up with it, possibly before I remember!

The gears can be modified from Myford ones by pressing in a keyed Bush. As long as the two gears total 82 you can use any ratio and not be limited with what Harrison’s supplied.

Vertical milling in the home workshop, by Arnold Throp is also very good, and written by a man who started his apprenticeship at Cole,Marchant and Morley, in Bradford, building steam engines!

Thanks Phil & John .. your info is much appreciated..I will be stripping the Miller over the Xmas break and giving it a full overhaul and paint along with looking for Star Points in the motor so I can run it on my rotary converter.. I'm sure I'll be back asking for more of your knowledge.. thanks guys
