Harrison L5 Apron/carriage adjust

I have a bit of play between carriage and bed on the far side. There are 3 bolts holding a plate to stop yy movement but no way to adjust it. Anyone know what im missing?

In my Harrison manual for the L5A it states.

Saddle Adjustment.
To adjust the rear strip release the four nuts on the underside, adjust the headless set screws by turning clockwise and re-lock the nuts.

My L5a also doesn't have any adjusting screws. The only way I can see to adjust out any play is to measure the gap between the plate and the underside of the bed with feeler guages and then machine/grind an appropriate step along the length of the plate.

Are you sure there is no way to adjust?

I'll admit I've not worked on Harrisons but the lathes I have worked on have three bolts to lock the plate and three grub screws to adjust it. The grub screws hold the plate off the underside of the carraige. The grub screw might not sit proud so may not be obvious.

That agrees with what it says in my manual as per previous post.

I will check on my own lathe later today to see if it has adjustment screws and report back.

You must have a different handbook to mine, I believe mine is original to the lathe but as usual is undated.

My lathe is serial number 96714 and someone has hand written that and a date of 1959 inside the cover. That agrees with the chart on the lathes website as well.

Anyway I have just been out and looked at mine, There are not four nuts on the strip but just three bolts, there is no sign of any adjustment screws either.

So a bit of good old fitting practice is going to be needed by the looks of it.

Just a thought, if it is just the strip that has worn could you not just reverse it and use the other face rather than trying to scrape it etc. ?

If I put a jack under the apron there is about 30 thou lift…..that would make for some serious scraping! Plus getting the thing off would require hard lifting and thats a no no these days. For most jobs gravity acting on the raised part of the bed ensures nothing moves, but with big cuts whilst boring it can get the jitters. Reckon I will adapt the existing under-plate with the 3 bolts to suit. Perhaps mill a slot along its length, add a few tapped holes and make Gib strips?
