Granville Lathe identification

Hello,

I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me properly identifying this lathe. I'm in charge of researching and hopefully finding this wonderful beast a new home. I know that it is a Granville Screwcutting Lathe and think it may be a senior with a guard missing or hidden in the work shop somewhere.

I have attached some pictures. I would be very grateful for any information about this lathe and anything I should be looking out for or need to do in order to best prepare it for sale.

Hi Andy,

Does the lathe have a set of gears with it? A lack of the changegears for screwcutting may well put people off.

I assume you have already done the obligatory check on the lathes.co.uk web site?

With what seems to be a good amount of paint and only minor rusting it's an ideal candidate for restoration, but as above, best leave all that alone or it takes the fun and patina away

Definitely not a Granville Senior. Looks like a CSL2. See lathes.co.uk for the full story.

Hi all,

Thank you for all your responses. I've been out sorting out and looking through everything that was near the lathe. Ralph it looks like there are some gears, I'm not entirely sure how many its supposed to have. I've been on lathe.co.uk and there is little information about the CSL2 (thanks for pointing that out Graham, definitely looks like a CSL2 and quite right that it's 100% not a senior).

There are so many different boxes of bits. I'll have to set them all out and and photograph it.

I haven't found another example of this being sold any where. Does anyone have any idea of its approx value. I really want to find someone who will be able to restore and use it.

I'd say for a general less well known rusty machine it would be lucky to get £150 depending on area of the country. I'm afraid the tailstock barrel looks shot and it would be unfair to offload it on someone who doesn't know how to make a new one.

Look around ebay over a month or so and you will see a fair few clean and running lathes of this size that only fetch a few hundred. For example this lovely C.A.Mann from about 1900 came up twice with no takers and it is a 12×36 with power facing. (no not mine but I had one I regret giving to a friend)

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to this thread. I'm certainly not looking to lump someone with a machine they can't fix or use.

I have had a look on ebay and lots of other sites and have struggled to find another machine like this being sold.

Everyone has been so helpful and I'm very grateful. Its time to find this guy a deserving new home
